Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services (MHS) that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) Operations division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth/811 medical communications for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health.

We access all communities in Nova Scotia in a timely and efficient manner with our fleet of more than 180 ambulances and support vehicles operating out of 60+ stations. We respond to 165,000+ calls annually across the province, which are actively managed through the EHS Operations Medical Communications Centre, the hub of all emergency (911) and non-emergency (hospital transfers) medical calls.

The EHS Operations LifeFlight program provides even greater accessibility by responding to patients on scene or through inter-facility transports by our critical care team via helicopter, fixed wing, or ground ambulance.

In addition, paramedics in Nova Scotia participate in various programs both urban and rural such as community-based paramedic programs, collaborative emergency centres, and emergency preparedness and special operations, to name a few.

Reporting to the Provincial Manager - Occupational Health & Safety, this role is responsible for developing, implementing, and coordinating occupational health and safety, vehicle safety and driver education and training programs. The Safety Development Specialist has a key role in determining education and training needs that foster a safe work environment and ensure employees and managers are equipped with the knowledge and skills to work and drive safely.

The Safety Development Specialist is a knowledge translator that utilizes their experience to identify the most effective training delivery methods to address the safety related aspects of emergency driving and workplace safety. This role provides oversight into the vehicle monitoring system program by assessing driving performance.

An expert in adult education, this role develops curriculum content that is practical, inclusive and responsive to workplace safety needs and risks.

Safe Vehicle Handling Training

  • Using adult education principles develop, coordinate and/or deliver:
  • Ongoing proactive driver training
  • Vehicle safety and handling training and monitoring programs, incorporating telematics, defensive driving, incident prevention strategies and regulatory requirements
  • Safety training for specialty system vehicles
  • Driver evaluations as part of the hiring and remedial processes
  • Create engaging training experiences that incorporate group, in-person and virtual modes of delivery
  • Evaluate and update training modules as part of quality assurance
  • Create knowledge translation resources for practice and policymaking in safe vehicle environment
  • Provide support with the vehicle monitoring system structure and deployment to support safe vehicle operations

Occupational Health & Safety Training

  • Using adult education principles, develop, coordinate and/or deliver:
  • Innovative and evidence-based safety learning programs and curriculum for all employee groups to enhance safety and ensure regulatory compliance
  • Engaging training experiences that incorporate group, in-person and virtual modes of delivery for new and existing employees and leaders
  • Act as a knowledge translator identifying key safety messages and the most effective delivery methods
  • Work with internal teams to develop and deliver safety related curriculum
  • Create knowledge translation resources for practice and policymaking for safe work environment
  • Evaluate and update safety training modules as part of quality assurance

Performance Evaluation and Effectiveness

  • Coordinate, direct and evaluate training performance of Safety Coaches and provide feedback
  • Assist with the recruitment of Safety Coaches
  • Develop and provide initial and continuing education and resources for Safety Coaches
  • Collaborate with internal partners to develop and implement remedial and performance management plans related to driving, vehicle safety behavior and other safety related behaviors
  • Coordinate and/or deliver remedial safe driver training and evaluations
  • Perform audits on individual driver performance reports and provide feedback directly to staff
  • Review driver's abstracts and driving performance
  • Provide recommended preventative and remedial training actions based on identified safety and safe vehicle handling trends

Safe Work Environment

  • Stay current with industry best practices, emerging research, and legislative changes related to safe vehicle handling and workplace health and safety.
  • Embed and promote safety in all training curriculum and discussions with all employees and leaders
  • Make routine use of safety practices and a positive safety culture relatable to workplace needs
  • Assist and/or participate with collision investigations and action plans
  • Integrate employee incident and vehicle collision findings and trends into training and prevention strategies
  • Any other assigned duties

Documentation and Reports

  • Prepare or contribute to the development, evaluation, and continuous quality improvement of safe vehicle handling and occupational health and safety policies, procedures, workflows, tools and reports.
  • Ensure accuracy of information on forms, data, tracking and documentation.
  • Maintain documentation for the Vehicle Safety Training Program
  • Maintain training records
  • Contribute to audits, assessments, and quality assurance reviews to ensure regulatory compliance and a focus on safety and vehicle safety.

Education & Experience

  • Education as a first responder driving emergency vehicles while responding with lights and sirens during an emergency call
  • Two-year relevant post-secondary diploma. A combination of experience and education may be considered
  • Adult education certification
  • Possess a Class 4 Nova Scotia driver's license in good standing
  • Minimum 5 years experience in delivering adult/driver education and creating curriculum
