The Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland is North America's most comprehensive marine institute dedicated to education, training, applied research, industrial response and technology transfer in support of oceans industries.
The Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research (CFER) is a research and training unit created within the Marine Institute's School of Fisheries that focuses on fisheries science and fisheries management. The unit conducts scientific research focusing on Newfoundland and Labrador fisheries and ecosystems, including their stocks and their sustainability. CFER interacts and forms a conduit to both provincial and federal research activities and management, including stock and ecosystem assessments.
DUTIES
The successful applicant will participate in the development and delivery of research initiatives in areas related to fisheries science as part of ongoing CFER projects. Specifically, duties will relate to a project working to develop indicators for beach quality and quantifying capelin egg concentration in Placentia and Conception Bay area. Additional duties will mainly support the multi-year monitoring marine conservation areas off of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The successful applicant will contribute to two current projects.
- Coastal field work, collecting core sediment samples
- Processing sediment samples in laboratory
- Counting and staging eggs (capelin)
- Reviewing underwater drop camera footage, annotating and identification of species
- Entering and analysis of data for reporting
Perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience (3-5 years) conducting conservation-oriented fisheries and research, coastal field experience; graduation with a minimum of Bachelor of Science with an emphasis on fisheries or biological science; experience working in a laboratory, specifically use of stereo and compound microscopes. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. Strong organizational, interpersonal and writing skills are required, possession of a valid class 5 driver licence as issued by the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. WHIMIS and TDG certification considered assets.
SALARY: $58,722 – $76,259 per annum (Research and Technical Personnel IV, NAPE Local 7405) (Salary Scale Effective September 1, 2025)
