The Fulcher Foundation is a private charitable foundation dedicated to improving the quality of life in Nova Scotia. By prioritizing support for initiatives that promote inclusiveness, rural economic development, and sustainability, the Foundation addresses the unique needs of communities and citizens across the province. As one of the largest private foundations in Nova Scotia, the Fulcher Foundation has a track record of impact through strategic philanthropy, community partnerships, and leadership on key issues.
The Fulcher Foundation is at an exciting inflection point as it seeks an Executive Director to build upon the visionary legacy of founder Wayne Fulcher. This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of one of Nova Scotia's most impactful private foundations during a period of growth and expansion. The successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to lead an organization transitioning from its quiet, behind-the-scenes origins into a recognized provincial leader in collaborative philanthropy. You'll inherit a strong foundation of innovative projects and community partnerships while having the autonomy to identify new opportunities, develop strategic initiatives, and create lasting impact across Nova Scotia's rural and Indigenous communities.
Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the Chair of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will:
- Collaborate with the Board on strategic priorities, provide comprehensive reporting, support governance practices, and assist with Board development.
- Manage grant processes, build relationships with grant recipients and community partners, represent the Foundation publicly, and cultivate new giving opportunities.
- Prepare financial reports and budgets, monitor disbursements and records, coordinate with investment advisors, and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Develop communications materials and promote Foundation awareness and impact.
- Build relationships with peers and leaders, participate in collaborative networks, and engage in relevant advocacy efforts.
Ideal Candidate Profile
As the ideal candidate, you are a naturally inquisitive self-starter with genuine enthusiasm for the Fulcher Foundation's mission of supporting inclusiveness, rural economic development, and sustainability across Nova Scotia. You bring leadership experience with a focus on project management and community engagement, particularly within the non-profit, rural economic, or community development sectors. You possess strong business and financial acumen, enabling you to confidently manage the day-to-day operations while also contributing meaningfully to higher-level strategic planning and decision-making alongside the board to shape the future of the organization.
With an entrepreneurial spirit and a hands-on, pragmatic leadership style, you actively seek opportunities to make a difference, listening closely, responding decisively, and always looking for ways to create meaningful impact. You understand the dynamics of entrepreneurship and rural economies, including how to help others secure financing for innovative ideas. You can see how pilot projects in one region can create scalable frameworks for broader provincial impact, and you're adept at leveraging modest investments to attract additional funding and partners, reinforcing the Foundation's catalytic role.
You are a natural relationship builder with excellent communication skills who can confidently serve as the public face of the Foundation while engaging diverse groups, from Indigenous leaders and community partners to government representatives and philanthropic peers. You also have experience that helps you understand non-profit funding structures, grant applications, and review processes, allowing you to assess proposals for alignment with the Foundation's mission. Above all, you are trustworthy and accountable and are ready to steward the legacy of a respected family foundation while helping it grow and evolve to deepen its impact across Nova Scotia.
