Reporting to the Regional Director of Clinical Services, the Respiratory Therapist is responsible for providing care to clients of all ages at the Labrador Health Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, as well as to outpatients from surrounding Labrador communities. This position also maintains accountability to the Provincial Professional Practice Consultant for Respiratory Therapy regarding professional integrity and practice issues.
The Respiratory Therapist applies clinical expertise in the diagnosis, management, and prevention of cardiorespiratory disorders and demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of these conditions across the lifespan?from neonates to the elderly. This position may involve travel to other hospitals or clinics within the region, other regions of the province, and occasionally outside the province. Travel to clients? homes may also be required.
Qualifications:
? Graduation from an accredited Program of Respiratory Therapy;
? Current registration with the NL Council of Health Professionals is required;
? Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support Certificate;
? Advanced Cardiopulmonary Life Support Certificate;
? Neonatal Resuscitation Certificate;
? Must have strong computer skills, and writing skills;
? Must have good communication, and interpersonal skills, and be able to do in-servicing and presentations to staff, and other stakeholders for the Respiratory Therapy Services;
? The successful applicant will be required to submit a satisfactory certificate of conduct.
Duties: (Included but not limited to)
? Emergency intubation/extubating airway management of adults, pediatrics, and neonates as life saving measures;
? Initiate and manage non-invasive/invasive ventilatory support via ventilators to adults, pediatrics and neonates to maintain life within the guidelines of departmental policies and procedures;
? Inserts arterial lines for continuous blood pressure monitoring;
? Obtains arterial blood gases/lab work via arterial lines or by arterial puncture, analyzes the results and institute/modify the required changes to the patient?s ventilatory requirements in consultation with the provider;
? Administer medications to critically ill patients;
? Respond to ?high risk? deliveries in which client?s respiratory status may be compromised;
? External cardiac massage and interpretation of basic EKG?s, cardiac outputs and hemodynamic profiles;
? Performs various respiratory diagnostic tests as required;
? Clinically assess and evaluate patient response to treatment and modify therapy based on this assessment and evaluation in consultation with the physician;
? Transport critically ill patients, monitor their status and initiates emergency intervention within the scope of practice to maintain patient life;
? Ensure that respiratory therapy supplies are ordered, stocked, and on hand as required;
? Other related duties as required.
