Position Title: Mental Health and Addictions Nurse
Location: Natoaganeg Health Centre
Status: Full-time Term, Two years with possibility of extension
Salary: Commensurate with education and experience
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours weekly
Position:
The Mental Health and Addictions Nurse will provide culturally safe and holistic mental health and addictions care and programming to individuals and families within the Natoaganeg Mi'kmaq Nation community.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, monitor and evaluate client Circle of Care Mental Health Care plans in consultation with appropriate health care providers and client or other stakeholders.
- Assist patients in developing life skills, coping strategies, and accessing community resources for ongoing mental health support.
- When needed, participate in client case management meetings and care facilitation sessions.
- Collaborate with psychiatrists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to develop and update treatment plans tailored to each patient's needs.
- Provide therapeutic interventions, administer medications, monitor for side effects, and offer support to patients and their families regarding mental health education.
- Assist clients and the community in building support networks or accessing other needed services including more intensive psychosocial, psychological and psychiatric assessments
- Advocate for clients and their families to ensure timely access to services, supports and information.
- Facilitate group sessions and community workshops on a variety of topics related to mental health, addictions, harm reduction, and other topics relevant to community members.
- Advocate for clients' needs and rights within the healthcare system from an anti-Indigenous racism lens.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records.
- Work with existing harm reduction and outreach staff to promote harm reduction strategies such as distribution of safer use supplies (e.g., needles, naloxone kits) and education on safer use practices.
- Provide support and education on overdose prevention and response to front line workers, leadership, and community members.
- Engage and support in crisis intervention for individuals experiencing acute mental health or addiction-related crises.
- Document accurate reports for data collection, interpretation, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in nursing
- Registered with the Nurses Association of New Brunswick
- Certification in Mental Health Nursing and/or Addictions Nursing preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in mental health and addictions nursing.
- Deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, languages, and health practices.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to interact empathetically with patients and their families.
- In-depth understanding of mental health conditions, treatment modalities, and medication management.
- Ability to handle mental health emergencies, ensuring effective de-escalation and safety protocols.
- Capable of managing the emotional and physical demands of mental health nursing.
- Awareness of Indigenous cultural safety training, anti-racist practice, and trauma-informed care.
- Strong organizational and coordination abilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in English
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in computer software and electronic health records.
- Culturally safe and respectful.
- Ability to build trust and rapport with clients and community members.
- Knowledge of psychopharmacology.
- Working knowledge of substance use and co-occurring disorders.
- Possesses knowledge of New Brunswick Mental Health Act.
- Demonstrates conflict resolution skills
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships
