POSITION: African Nova Scotian Youth Outreach Worker

Note: This is a designated position. Only applicants who identify as African Nova Scotian will be considered.

QUALIFICATIONS: Family Service Nova Scotia is seeking a qualified individual who identifies as African Nova Scotian and holds an undergraduate degree in Community Studies, Human Kinetics, Psychology, or Sociology, with experience working with youth and families. This is a permanent, full-time position.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Reporting to the Coordinator of Community Programming, the African Nova Scotian Youth Outreach Worker provides direct support to youth and helps connect them to community-based services and resources. The goal of this position is to help improve immediate and long-term educational, vocational, social, economic, and health outcomes for young people aged 16-24.

  • Additional skills and attributes include:
  • Lived experience and a deep understanding of African Nova Scotian communities to inform and guide your work
  • Knowledge of the specific issues and concerns affecting African Nova Scotian youth and families
  • Ability to apply an Afrocentric lens within established program guidelines, policies, and procedures
  • Strong grounding in race relations, cross-cultural understanding, human rights, and diversity
  • A valid driver's license and clear police background and child abuse registry checks are mandatory

Persons considered for this position must have a clear police background check, and a clear child abuse registry check, and a driver's license.
