Job SummaryThe Clinical Occupational Therapist II (Clinical OT II) applies advanced clinical knowledge and skills within the Neuropsychiatry program. The Neuropsychiatry program services individuals 18-64 years who are experiencing behavioral and emotional consequences of neurological conditions and a concurrent mental health condition who require significant support to improve quality of life. Occupational Therapy services will be provided through community-based services meeting people where they are in addition to a four bed inpatient unit services. The community based consultative team will connect with individuals in the acute phase of their condition, while admissions to the inpatient unit are provided for individuals who require more intensive treatment and stabilization. Occupational therapy will be trauma informed and recovery focused.
The Clinical OT II will build respectful relationships with clients, neuropsychiatry interprofessional team members, and others involved in the systems in which they work. The Clinical OT II will offer primarily community-based interventions that are collaborative, and relationship focused. The Clinical OT will co-create occupational participation goals with clients and their caregivers through assessment and treatment targeting ADL/IADL function, cognitive remediation, sensory needs, and recommendations for environmental modifications. Group-based interventions may also be a component of service.
This is a provincial tertiary care program therefore work includes input into program and policy development, project development, quality initiatives, participating in evidence-based practice, education, and community capacity building.
The Clinical OT II supervises the assigned Occupational Therapy Support Workers in the division. The Clinical OT II is sole charge and receives off-site clinical support and mentoring from the Occupational Therapist III in the Mental Health and Addictions program. The Clinical OT II will be responsible to precept Occupational Therapy students and offer other clinical education experience to students within NL Health Services.
This position reports to the Acute Care Manager responsible for the program and maintains accountability to the Professional Practice Consultant for Occupational Therapy for integrity and professional practice issues.

Regularly stands and walks when performing clinic activities and drives to and from sites/homes within the region.
Regularly sits to perform clinical documentation or administrative functions on the computer and observe or counsel clients. When in clinic or therapy sessions may work in awkward or cramped positions.
Fine/finger precision work is required when performing work on the computer, when teaching fine motor skills or using tools to adjust or repair equipment
Hand tools are used to make adjustments on equipment and to use equipment that requires rapid physical movement and reflexes, as well as controlled movement. Gross motor skills and the use of heavy equipment are required when working with clients in performing therapeutic activities, or to move equipment.
Job Qualifications
Graduate of a school or program of occupational therapy recognized by the board.
Current licensure with the Newfoundland and Labrador Occupational Therapy Board.
A minimum of three years of experience within the last five working as a Clinical Occupational Therapist in adult mental health and/or physical health is required.
Experience and training in cognitive remediation is an asset.
Experience in Sensory based interventions is an asset.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, with interprofessional team members, patients/residents/clients and their families in a one-to-one and group environment.
Demonstrated effective written communication skills required for client documentation, report writing and professional communications.
Demonstrated ability to effectively translate and communicate knowledge in the specialized area of occupational therapy practice to others.
Proven supervisory and leadership skills.
Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor and train Clinical Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapist Support Workers and students.
Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as a member of an interprofessional team.
Proven ability to assume professional responsibility for safe, ethical and effective practice.
