The mandate of the Eel Ground Health and Wellness Center is to ensure the health needs of the community are met through the design, implementation and delivery of proactive health care services, initiatives and programs.

The Maternal Child Health Program provides resources and supports to pregnant women and parents of infants and children up to six years of age. This program ensures that child, mother, father, families and ultimately communities have opportunities to increase their skills to provide safe and nurturing care for their children, and are supported throughout preconception, pregnancy and early childhood to ensure the best health and development outcomes for children and the well-being of their parents.

The children's Oral Health Initiative (COHI) is an early childhood tooth decay prevention program designed for First Nation children ages 0 - 7. The goal of the program is to improve oral health and well-being through education, early intervention and prevention.

Maternal Child Health Duties

  • Provide outreach services, pre and postnatal support, informing communities about the Maternal Child Health Program
  • Conduct home visits, provide information related to parenting skills, problem solving, childhood growth and development, baby food making classes, ages & stages assessments and provide referrals as required
  • Carry out activities to support families in improving health outcomes for pregnant women and their families
  • In-home support, utilizing a strength-based model with families who have children between the ages of 0-6 years
  • Assist the Community Health Nurse to provide and deliver programs and services i.e. prenatal classes
  • Advocate, refer and act as a liaison for families;
  • Work closely with other Health Care Professionals
  • planning and delivering workshops, community education events and facilitate support groups
  • Developing of appropriate awareness materials; administering the Canada pre-natal nutrition coupon program
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Completes forms and annual reports as required
  • Encourage BFI (breastfeeding friendly initiatives)
  • Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) education and awareness activities

Children's Oral Health Initiative Duties

  • Distribute and retrieve COHI consent for service forms
  • Arrange and assist with dental screenings for children 0 to 7
  • Provide services directed by the dental therapist
  • Maintain records in a confidential manner
  • Maintain inventory of COHI supplies

Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Early Childhood education, child & youth care or related field
  • DONA International certified Doula is an asset
  • Experience and/or training in Early Childhood Education
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver's License and have access to a reliable vehicle

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / Preferred Skills

  • Certified First Aid & CPR and Safe Food Handling Certificate required or willing to obtain;
  • Clean criminal records check/vulnerable sector check
  • Experience working with First Nations Communities an asset
  • Strong networking and community resource knowledge
  • Ability to maintain client confidentiality
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment, independent and as part of a team
  • Strong verbal and written skills
  • Efficient time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to organize and facilitate group activities
