(Permanent Position)
DUTIES
Under the direction of the Faculty of Science's Systems Manager, the successful applicant will be responsible for providing computer laboratory support and research computer support to faculty members in the Faculty of Science. This position will work with a team of IT specialists and will focus on providing support in the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, as well as other departments in the faculty as required. Duties include overseeing and ensuring efficient operation of departmental network services; troubleshooting existing software and hardware issues; updating software; assisting faculty and graduate students in identifying the software and/or hardware required to facilitate research programs, including commercial and freeware computer applications; developing software components/programs to support the automation of administrative functions systems; maintaining and providing ongoing support of research equipment; serving as departmental liaison with Information Technology Services (ITS) and Information Technology Procurement (ITP); and performing other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience (3-5 years) in research computer support; graduation from university with major course work in Computer Science; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Knowledge of commercial and freeware software packages, relevant to the departments within the Faculty of Science, and familiarity with Linux, Mac, and Windows based operating systems. Expertise in the integration of computer hardware and software into systems (research equipment) used for sample analyses and the collection of various biological and chemical data. A strong background in scripting/shell programming languages is required to support automation of system administrative functions. Understanding of web design and maintenance would be considered an asset. Strong analytical and communication skills are required.
SALARY $62,206 - 70,273 per annum (CUPE 1615)
