Aquatic Research Cluster (ARC) - CREAIT Network

(Two Year Contractual Position; With the Possibility for Extension)

BACKGROUND

The Core Research Equipment and Instrument Training (CREAIT) Network maintains and operates thematic clusters of multi-user, scientific research instrumentation in a variety of scientific laboratories at Memorial University. The Aquatic Research Cluster (ARC) provides research support, training, and analytical services to undergraduate and graduate students, University researchers, government agencies, and private sector R&D companies. ARC provides molecular biology research support and analytical services, primarily in characterization of lipid, hydrocarbon and sterol profiles, as well as CHN determination.

DUTIES

Reporting to the Manager of Operations, CREAIT Network, the successful applicant will be responsible for performing professional and technical work in a research support capacity as part of the ARC (Aquatic Research Cluster) node of CREAIT. Duties include the provision of lipid, hydrocarbon, sterol, and CHN analysis services; using a variety of tools and instrumentation including Agilent GC-FIDs, Perkin-Elmer 2400 Series II CHN analyzer, Iatroscan MK-6 TLC-FID/FPD analyzer, and wet chemistry facilities; assisting and advising users in the design and implementation of experiments and interpretation of results; training and supervising a variety of laboratory users including faculty, staff, and students; performing instrument setup, optimization, and maintenance; scheduling; data acquisition, processing, quality control, and report generation; promoting laboratory services and generation of work activity through internal and external sources; liaising with and directing service engineers and other technical support to optimize instrument performance and useful life; and performing other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience (2 years) in sample preparation and execution of lipids and amino acids analysis; completion of a Ph.D. in Biochemistry or a related discipline. Experience in the operation and maintenance of gas chromatography instrumentation, with a particular focus on Agilent GC-FID instrumentation, and in the design and implementation of related experiments is required. The position will require exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills as well as an ability to prioritize and manage simultaneous project activities. Experience with Memorial's procurement policy, procedures, and Banner account reconciliation are considered assets.

SALARY $76,250 - $98,840 per annum (Management and Professional)
