Position Type: Term to June 2025

Location: Saint John

Salary Range: $1,784.00 to $2,491.00 bi-weekly.

Responsibilities

As part of the School of Engineering and reporting to the Academic Chair, the Laboratory Support is an important member of the academic team and supports students and faculty with a safe and effective learning environment. This position is responsible for maintaining all equipment, supplies and tools that are used in labs and shops including ordering, replenishing, and ensuring inventory control. Using a variety of appropriate strategies, this position will strive to ensure that all safety rules and regulations are strictly adhered to in accordance with the NB Occupational Health & Safety Act and relevant manufacturer specifications.

In this role, you will:

  • Work to maintain a culture of health and safety, using student appropriate strategies to ensure compliance and collaborating with the academic team to ensure compliance.
  • Maintain comprehensive repair and maintenance schedules on all instructional equipment in various labs.
  • Issue tools and equipment to staff and students during scheduled classes.
  • Maintain records of supplies, tools and equipment issued and returned.
  • Mark and identify tools and equipment, using identification tags, stamps, or electric marking tools.
  • Enforce manufacturer specified equipment or procedural safety rules and consult, collaborate, and communicate with faculty, staff and students on matters pertaining to safety concerns.
  • Follow and adhere to all given instructions including work procedures, manufacturer operational and maintenance requirements, Standard Operating procedures (SOPs), and safety requirements.
  • Complete visual checks to confirm that students are donning personal protective equipment (e.g. safety glasses, boots, ear protection) as required, and resolve issues in an effective and collaborative manner.
  • Assemble and issuing of requisitions for lab classes including segregating of course specific materials and continuous small-ware inventory management.
  • In consultation with the Program Coordinating Instructor and Storekeeper, ordering supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • Maintain data and quality control records.
  • Assist with other duties as required.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Diploma or Degree in a related field.
  • Related years of work experience.

Technical Skills:

  • Must be safety conscious, organized and focused on cleanliness.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (e.g., Outlook, Excel, Word).
  • General knowledge of laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
  • Solid knowledge of Electrical and Instrumentation fields.
  • General knowledge of Soldering.
  • General knowledge of Wiring.
  • General knowledge of Drilling and Mounting.
  • General knowledge of Tapping and Threading.

Professional Skills:

  • Highly flexible with excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to navigate and build relationships effectively throughout the organization.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, analytical ability, and innovative thinking.
  • Self-motivated, service and results oriented.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively independently and within a team.
  • A desire for continuous learning and growth.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

Assets:

  • Experience with LabVolt (Festo) Equipment.
  • Experience working in a post-secondary environment.

Candidates must possess a valid Driver's License as travel will be required.

Other combinations of education and experience may be considered as equivalent. Subject to competition response, the minimum qualifications may be raised.
