Position Summary:

The BounceBack Coach is responsible for coaching primary health care patients in a structured self-help program for anxiety, low mood, and depression as part of a CMHA program called BounceBack: Reclaim your Health. This is a non-clinical position requiring excellent communications skills. The position has a small community development role which involves promoting and explaining the program to primary health care providers (who refer participants to the program), health care support staff and the general public.

Responsibilities:

  • Supporting primary health care patients to acquire self-help strategies to manage anxiety, low mood and/or depression.
  • Encouraging participants to use established self-help materials and retain a focus on the materials.
  • Helping participants tackle obstacles in using the materials.
  • Assisting participants to put what they have learned into practice.
  • Reviewing participant progress and reinforce practice.
  • Maintaining effective communication and record-keeping between participants, primary care referrers and health organizational staff, and the Bounce Back Psychologist Consultant.
  • Commitment to enhancing access to mental health care or supports.

Accountabilities:

Participant Coaching and Support

  • Provide guided self-help through telephone-based communication on a specified protocol to patients referred by their primary health care provider.
  • Provide motivational support and encouragement, reinforce workbook concepts and activities, and problem-solve to promote program completion.
  • Maintain a responsive, accessible service.
  • Report any patient concerns or safety issues immediately to the patient's primary health care physician and the project Psychologist Consultant.
  • Administer pre- and post-program structured questionnaires measuring patient's quality of life and anxiety/depression symptoms.
  • Maintain basic participant records documenting progress through the self-help program and enter information in a timely manner into a secure database.
  • Maintain a flexible working schedule to ensure coaching services are offered at convenient times to the participant.
  • Contact and network with primary health care providers and others to promote the Bounce Back program, including explaining the screening and referral process.
  • Liaison with community partners and primary health care providers under the direction of the manager and / or Director of Operations.
  • Explain and maintain referral protocols with primary care practices participating in Bounce Back to ensure a responsive service.
  • Promote the Bounce Back program through participation in information sessions and other community events as required.

  • Flexible working hours, including some evenings.
  • Possible travel across the province and access to reliable transportation.
  • Working in a variety of settings or in partnership with other health agencies.
  • Attendance at post-hire training events and participant at supervisory teleconferences.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with co-workers and external persons, programs, departments and agencies.
  • Participate in supervision, staff, program and professional development activities.
  • Participate in program and agency meetings and committees.
  • Maintain file documentation and program statistics in prescribed manner.
  • Demonstrates competence in understanding cultural diversity and works effectively with individuals with various cultural backgrounds.

Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to candidates with a post-secondary degree or program in a human service-related discipline such as social work, psychology, sociology, or education and at least two years of experience in the following:
  • Delivering health promotion activities or health screening tools.
  • Conducting standardized assessments of participants.
  • Creating a collaborative relationship with participants.
  • Engaging targeted populations and the general public.
  • Coaching and/or teaching experience an asset.
  • Community development experience an asset.
  • Personal or lived experience of mental health issues an asset.

A combination of work experience and education will be considered.

  • A valid Work Permit is mandatory for temporary residents.
  • Residency in New Brunswick (NB) or willingness to relocate is mandatory.
  • Proficiency in both English and French languages is mandatory
  • A new Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check is mandatory.

Knowledge, Abilities & Skills:

  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft 365 is required.
  • Appointment booking and record keeping.
  • Deliver structured intervention protocols.
  • Verbally review key areas of participant's treatment plan.
  • Listen to others, with ability to check, clarify and summarize what was said.
  • Coach and motivate participants.
  • Professional helping and skills teaching.
  • Build and maintain relationships - in person and on telephone.

Working Conditions:

  • The workweek is 37.5 hours.
  • Flexible work schedules may be required to meet operational requirements.
  • Travel within the province may be required.
  • Work in various settings or in partnership with other health agencies is expected.
  • This position will report directly to the BounceBack Program Manager
