Job Summary
The Social Worker III is a specialized social work position for the in-patient eating disorder program located at the in-patient psychiatry unit of the Health Sciences Centre. The primary purpose of the Social Worker III position is to apply advanced clinical knowledge and skill of Social Work practice to the treatment of inpatient clients and families and to provide consultation as needed to the community and other service providers. This position will assist with the development, ongoing research and evaluation of the service. The Social Worker will assist with the overall coordination of eating disorder services along the continuum of care. They use independent judgement in determining appropriate intervention strategies for families, as well as provide ongoing support to patients who are discharged and transitioning to the community.

The Social Worker will act as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team which plans, develops and provides inpatient services to adults who have eating disorders or disorder eating. This position is primarily responsible for provision of services to the clients and their family. They use a broad range of theoretical frameworks and professional practices to provide therapeutic interventions to complex practice situations. This position provides consultation to staff and others in this specialized area of practice, provides education for Social Workers and social work students and others, participates in quality initiatives as well as participates in evidence-based practice. They will also be responsible for providing field instruction to social work students.

This position reports to the Program Manager of the Health Sciences Psychiatry program and is accountable to the professional practice consultant for Social Work for professional practice issues.

Job Demands

Occasional lifting or physical strength required to carry boxes of resources/materials, flip charts and audio-visual equipment up to 15 lbs.
Visual and auditory concentration is required when reviewing client files/notes and for documenting work into computerized systems.
A higher than normal level of attentiveness and carefulness is required when assessing clients, especially those who may be at a high risk, in order to ensure health and safety of all.
Lack of control over the work pace and time pressures can occur when completing assessments, case documentation and workload reports, managing emergency and routine appointments within the allocated timeframe.
Occasionally there are interruptions due to a crisis situation.

Job Qualifications
Graduation with a Clinical or Integrated Master's degree in Social Work from an accredited program with the MSW field placement in a clinical practice is required.
Current and continuing registration with the Newfoundland and Labrador College of Social Workers (NLCSW) is required.
Minimum of five years of experience in the last seven working as a Social Worker in a mental health and addictions program is required.
Experience with individual, family, couples and group therapy is required.
Experience in working with adults with eating disorders is an asset.
Experience in brief therapy modalities is an asset.
ASIST training is an asset.
Knowledge of relevant legislation, including but not limited to, Mental Health Care and Treatment Act, Adult Protection Act, Advanced Health Care Directives Act, Medical Assistance in Dying, and the Children, Youth and Families Act.
Knowledge of the Recovery Model.
Knowledge of eating disorders and their impacts on clients and families.
Knowledge of mental health, addictions, concurrent disorders, trauma and associated treatment.
Knowledge of discharge planning and community-based resources.
Knowledge of crisis interventions and supportive counseling.
Knowledge of case management.
Demonstrated clinical skills in the areas of suicide intervention and working with family with complex mental health needs.
Demonstrated strong clinical leadership skills.
Demonstrated ability to direct, supervise and mentor students.
Exhibited strong program development and evaluation skills.
Demonstrated proven analytical, critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making and organizational and research Exhibited strong written and oral communication skills as well as the ability to deliver/facilitate effective presentations.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Demonstrated ability to write proposals, develop and evaluate clinical projects.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively within an interprofessional environment and provide clinical consultation.
Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, prioritizing caseloads and patient needs.
A satisfactory record of work performance is required.
