PROGRAM SUMMARY:

The Community Learning Services program delivers a variety of learning opportunities for community members. The Program cultivates community understanding of the broader definitions of literacy that embrace varied elements and methodologies of learning, and values and builds on traditional knowledge. The Program works in partnership with formal academic learning providers and other community serving organizations.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Community Learning Services Coordinator is responsible for the delivery of adult literacy services, collaborating with formal and informal learning providers and other community organizations.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports To: Executive Director (closely work with the Program Manager)

Direct Reports: None

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Deliver all aspects of community learning including one-to-one tutoring, group programming and workshops, and drop-in literacy services.
  • Provide intake and assessment for new learners.
  • Support learners in their initial and ongoing literacy and learning activities through assistance with individual programs and evaluation.
  • Secure financial support to operate and sustain the program, engaging multiple funders and community stakeholders.
  • Participate in community partnerships and networks that cultivate awareness of literacy programs, contribute to enhanced literacy service delivery, and illuminate gaps and concerns within the community.
  • Recruit and train volunteer tutors to work with learners; contract facilitators for group programs as needed.
  • Alongside the Literacy Outreach Coordinator, facilitate two annual literacy events in partnership with the college and other community organizations.
  • Assist local organizations and service providers with developing plain language materials and perform literacy audits when requested.
  • Coordinate publicity and advertising for public literacy programming and events including creation and distribution of social media content, posters, advertisements, and brochures.
  • Maintain ongoing records of literacy activities for reporting purposes and tracking outcomes of literacy programming. Document statistics of learners and courses in accordance to funding requirements using the Community Adult Learning Program database.
  • Actively participate in program evaluations.
  • Complete all written reports and evaluations required by funders and complete annual reports and strategic plans, and work plans as required
  • Attend virtual monthly meetings with provincial funders.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • Related post-secondary training and a minimum of two years experience in a similar position or a combination of relevant training and experience.
  • Relevant training could include:
    • Adult Education
    • Literacy

Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience working in adult education, program management, community outreach, and human relations
  • Skilled at using various forms of media for marketing and promotion
  • Certification in Occupational First Aid and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (provided)

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work with, and provide consultation to community agencies and staff
  • Self directed and works well independently and as part of a team
  • Possesses excellent written and verbal communication skill
  • Motivated, well organized and detail orientated person with the ability to prioritize
  • Demonstrated ability to interact positively with SCSA board, staff, clients and the public in-person and over the telephone

Working Conditions

  • Regularly scheduled hours of work between Monday and Friday
  • Office environment with routine office procedures

  • Be familiar with and adhere to the philosophy, policies and procedures of the Association.
  • Represent the Association positively and professionally at all times.
  • Understand and be committed to terms of confidentiality, and sign a pledge of confidentiality.
  • Undergo a Criminal Record Search as and when required by the Association
  • Actively participate in regular performance evaluations.
  • Possess a valid Class 5 Driver's License.
