OVERVIEW: Reporting to the Teacher Principal, the Preservation Mentor will carry duties and responsibilities focused on three key areas to support student success; outreach, extracurricular planning, and educational support, Shawenim Abinoojii is dedicated to the sacred duty of loving, protecting, and nurturing First Nation children and their families. Shawenim Abinoojii High School was established on the principals and rights based on the Anishinaabeg people. Shawenim Abinoojii is committed to supporting youth in care and their educational goals in a way that meets their needs and learning style, while honoring their cultural identity and connection to their home communities. Utilizing an approach based on the core values of the seven sacred teachings (love, respect, courage, honesty, wisdom, humility, and truth)

KEY RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Plan, propose and begin skating/ hockey program and other activities to reduce gang affiliation and substance.
  • Manage a budget and purchase equipment and other program essentials needed.
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies at our High School and Resource Centre.
  • Organize weekly check-ins with youth who are affected by chronic absences, and in-home visits with students and house parents to find reasons for absences.
  • Liase between internal SAI programs, and external resources and find collaborative ways of working together to ensure student attendance and success.
  • Create gym cards and physical recreation plans for students that can be done during gym hours (primarily without the use of weights).
  • Create a goal setting template and work with students to create plans to achieve their goals.
  • Develop forms and documents that will implement programming or planning for reintegration of students to the school.
  • Offer tutoring programming and support in Ste Anne's Resource Centre once a week.
  • Supervise students in classroom, resource center, and out of school activities as required.
  • Assist students to understand, learn, and complete their schoolwork under the direction of the teacher.
  • Work in harmony with all staff to provide a safe and supportive environment for students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-secondary in Education, or related field of study, and experience working in a school setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge &/or understanding of Indigenous perspectives, First Nations culture & traditional philosophies.
  • Demonstrated skills and competence to establish supportive, trusting relationships with students and their supports.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Efficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs and ability to use to create forms, schedules, and other programming documents.
  • Satisfactory Child Abuse, Vulnerable Person Check & Criminal Record Check
  • Excellent communication, organization, problem solving, & team skills.
  • Ability to speak Anishinaabe is an asset.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work evenings, depending on after-school programming needs.
  • Able to travel to Ste Anne's Resource Center to offer programming.
  • First Aid CPR
  • Class 4 Driver's License, and/or willing to work towards obtaining.
  • Class 5 Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle.
