Consumption and Treatment Services (CTS) is a health service that provides a safe and supportive environment for people to consume pre-obtained substances under medical supervision. In addition to supervised consumption, individuals are provided with sterile harm reduction supplies, education on safer substance use/overdose prevention, medical monitoring post-consumption, medical assessment, counselling, and connections to primary care, addiction treatment, mental health support and other services.

To apply for this position, you are required to be a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN), be a member of the College of Nurses and have at least 3 years' experience in a combination of hospital and community settings and/or public health. You have strong knowledge and experience work with harm reduction philosophies and practices as well as have a passion for providing care for individuals using substances. You have experience working in a harm reduction setting. You have a strong ability to work with and build a positive rapport with marginalized individuals including those who are street involved, actively using substances, and who struggle with mental health issues. You are comfortable and have experience working with individuals actively using substances. You understand Indigenous Cultural Safety principles and trauma-informed care are able to problem solve, multitask and take initiative. You are able to work at top of scope for a RPN and can work independently. You understand and are committed to the Mission, Vision and Values of the Guelph CHC

PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES

Work directly in the consumption area and establish rapport with clients in order to:

  • Supervise consumption
  • Intervene in emergency situations.
  • Triage client health needs
  • Provide harm reduction education regarding safer substance use
  • Ensure access to harm reduction supplies
  • Monitor for signs of drug overdose or anaphylaxis
  • Provide referrals to address health, addiction/mental health and social needs as needed
  • Support referrals to RN and other medical professionals
  • Document client charts if necessary
