Job Title: Technical Services / Cataloguing LibrarianJob ID: PL968547711Location: Vancouver, BC Overview:The Taxonomist designs, creates, edits, and maintains taxonomies and controlled vocabularies for managing, organizing, indexing, and retrieving electronic materials in different formats such as documents, media, and records to ensure safeguarding and easy retrieval of company information. What you will be doing:
  • Supports the ongoing operation of computer systems used by the department to deliver their products and services to internal clients, including the integrated library system and external subscription services. Investigates impacts of new technology on existing and emerging information products. Troubleshoots system problems on unique system applications used by the department, including software for departmental databases, websites and hardware problems.
  • Acquires and catalogues a wide variety of library materials in various formats, including audio-visual materials, in accordance with library standards such as AACR2R, LCSH, DDC, RDA, Dublin Core, and MARC 21, using the integrated library system.
  • Within service agreements, performs high level research (primary and secondary) for clients: meeting with clients; interpreting their information needs; determining an appropriate methodology to meet these needs; carry it out in a satisfactory manner to meet the client's expectations (e.g. Corporate Communications.; BPI; engineering; Internal Audit; etc.). This includes benchmark studies, competitor intelligence and public opinion assessments; gathering, analyzing, interpreting, synthesizing complex data and statistics and reporting information needed by client groups.
  • Acquires, negotiates, monitors and supports the use of digital resources managed through the company's Library and Archives, including subscription services and use of specialized equipment such as scanners and e-readers.
  • Participates in special projects as assigned by Corporate Librarian or manager.
  • Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties that do not affect the rating of the job as required or assigned (e.g., shelving, shelf reads, basic conservation, serial routing, mail delivery, etc.).
What you must have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Library Science, Information Management, Information Technology, Anthropology, or equivalent
  • Good working knowledge of how technology systems manage, classify, and provide access to information including systems such as SharePoint, and enterprise content management systems data
  • FileNet experience, preferred
  • Proven skills in information retrieval techniques familiar with many types of metadata issues
  • Ability to quickly understand complex processes and communicate them in simple language
  • Working knowledge of data analysis programs, an asset
  • Advanced MS Office skills (Word. PowerPoint, Excel, SharePoint)
  • Advanced English skills for professional environment, written and spoken
  • Knowledge of cataloguing procedures, principles and standards including AACR2R, LCSH, DDC, RDA, Dublin Core, MARC 21.
  • Current knowledge of database architecture and design; Web site design (HTML; CGI and publishing tools)
  • Knowledge of integrated library systems and digital asset management systems.
  • Knowledge of the company policies, procedures, practices and standards.
  • Knowledge of ethical and effective research methodologies and interview processes.
  • Knowledge of information sources and effective ways of obtaining information from electronic and print materials.
  • Knowledge of the company client groups; their business operations and plans.
  • Knowledge of the energy industry in general.
  • Excellent analytical skills and problem solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and communication skills.
  • Ability to evaluate, negotiate and maintain subscription agreements.
  • Master's Degree in Library and Information Studies (M.L.I.S.), or equivalent, with at least 1 year of related library experience in a technical services environment.
  • Experience in original cataloguing of a wide variety of materials, including audio-visual materials.
  • Experience with integrated library database systems
Term: 5-month contract; most likely to extendThis role requires regular or occasional attendance at a company workplace(s) and as such will be subject to the company's Contractor Vaccination Policy.
