WORK HOURS AND SCHEDULE: The regular working hours for this position is 14 hours per week. Standard working hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a one-hour unpaid lunch break.

PROGRAM SUMMARY:
The English Language and Multicultural Services (ELMS) Program empowers newcomers to Canada to live full lives in our community. The program offers free multi-level English classes, volunteer tutor matching, information and orientation, community connection services, employment services, and cultural learning activities. The service utilizes learner-centered approaches to teach and introduce newcomers to Canadian culture and resources, to connect them with the community and to strengthen English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. A welcoming and supportive community is built through shared intercultural experiences.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Language Instructor is responsible for planning, delivering, and assessing English language instruction for eligible adult learners at beginner to intermediate levels. The role involves fostering the development of speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while integrating aspects of Canadian culture to promote students' successful social and economic integration into Canadian society.
For formal LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) classes, instruction adheres to the Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA) framework, Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), and LINC program guidelines.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
- Reports To: ELMS Program Manager
- Direct Reports: None
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Deliver English classes to eligible students, focusing on improving English proficiency in all four skill areas (speaking, listening, reading, writing).
- Plan and implement lesson plans and student progress assessments.
- Maintain student portfolios, provide appropriate reflection time and feedback, conduct learner conferences and submit student progress reports.
- Track and record student attendance and progress, ensuring compliance with program standards.
- Research and recommend learning materials, maintain classroom and program resources, and support the use of technology in instruction.
- Assist with training, supporting, and matching volunteer tutors to students.
- Actively participate in community outreach to identify and welcome new learners into the program.
- Administer CLBPA Language Assessments (training to be provided).
- Collaborate with ELMS staff to support an integrated approach to Language and Settlement services and refer students to additional ELMS services as needed.
- Assist with other ELMS program activities as needed (e.g. Assist with Community Connection events, Volunteer Management, etc.).
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Post-secondary education in English, Linguistics, Education or a similar discipline, and/or
- Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Certificate.
- Minimum two years relevant experience in Adult EAL Education.
- Knowledge of CLBs and PBLA is an asset.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to design engaging and effective lesson plans that address all language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) and meet the diverse needs of learners.
- Skill in managing multi-level classes, fostering a positive learning environment, and addressing behavioral or attendance issues effectively.
- Proficiency in using a variety of teaching methods and materials to cater to different learning styles and levels.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent digital literacy skills, including experience with Microsoft Office, promotional material design and marketing tools, social media platforms, and the ability to deliver accurate reports and presentations.
- An understanding and compassionate approach to working with newcomers who may face additional challenges such as trauma, limited education, or low confidence.
- Must work well with diverse people, including those from various linguistic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and demonstrate knowledge of the challenges facing newcomers to Canada.
- Personable and professional attitude ensuring clients feel valued, respected and comfortable seeking support, while protecting client confidentiality.
- Self-directed and able to work well independently and as part of a team.
- Knowledge of local community organization and available services.

- Must be legally authorized to work in Canada.
- Be familiar with and adhere to the philosophy, policies, and procedures of the Association.
