About The Opportunity
Reporting directly to the executive team, the Director of Construction Operations – Major Projects will oversee the day-to-day execution of MML's largest projects. This includes aligning departmental operations with company objectives, driving efficiencies in scheduling and resource allocation, and ensuring projects meet client expectations on time and within budget. The role is highly cross-functional, requiring collaboration with Procurement, Engineering, Finance, and HR to deliver integrated solutions that support MML's continued growth.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Management
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of construction projects, ensuring completion on time, within budget, and in compliance with safety and quality standards.
- Develop and implement operational strategies to improve efficiency and productivity.
- Monitor progress across multiple projects and resolve scheduling, supply chain, or workforce challenges.
- Review and approve project schedules, budgets, and work plans.
Resource Allocation
- Manage labour, subcontractors, consultants, equipment, and material resources.
- Forecast resource needs with Project Managers and HR, ensuring the right skills are available.
- Partner with Engineering to meet targets in Labour Forecasting, Value Engineering, and Prefabrication.
Quality and Safety
- Partner with the Health and Safety team to lead and improve programs.
- Establish and enforce quality control procedures across all phases of construction.
Team Leadership
- Mentor and support Project Managers and operations staff.
- Conduct performance reviews and recommend training programs.
- Foster a collaborative, positive work environment.
Client Relations
- Build strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers.
- Represent the company in negotiations and meetings.
- Monitor and improve customer satisfaction.
Financial Management
- Develop and manage departmental budgets, exceeding $50M annually.
- Provide accurate forecasts and track performance.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality or safety.
Continuous Improvement
- Implement Lean/Six Sigma frameworks and other efficiency tools.
- Encourage innovation and adoption of new systems and technologies.
- Measure and adjust continuous improvement initiatives to maximize impact.
Performance Expectations
- Ensure compliance with MML policies, industry standards, and Ontario legislation.
- Build strong networks across customers, employees, subcontractors, and suppliers to support growth.
Requirements
What We're Looking for:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Construction Management, Business, or related field (Master's an asset).
- 7+ years of proven experience in construction operations management, including at least 5 years in a director-level leadership role within the ICI and/or mid- to high-rise residential construction industry.
- Strong understanding and hands-on experience with mechanical building systems (HVAC, plumbing, piping, BAS).
- Proven cross-functional leadership with Procurement, Engineering, Finance, and HR.
- Direct responsibility for developing and managing budgets exceeding $50M annually.
- Experience driving transformational change in high-growth or restructuring environments is a strong asset.
- Certifications such as PMP or Lean Six Sigma are strong assets.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and construction management tools.
- Driver's license in good standing.
