Job Title: Mechanical Designer

Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Designer to join our team. The successful candidate will design and develop mechanical structures for power electronic assemblies, ensuring secure mounting of components and optimizing production efficiency through Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) principles. This role involves developing layouts for electrical components, integrating cooling systems, collaborating with suppliers, and performing mechanical analyses to validate designs.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical structures for power electronic assemblies, including sheet metal and structural frames.
  • Ensure secure mounting of large and heavy components using appropriate fasteners and hardware.
  • Apply DFMA principles to optimize production efficiency.
  • Develop layouts for electrical components, considering thermal, vibration, and structural requirements.
  • Integrate piping, pumps, and fans into mechanical designs for cooling and airflow management.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and third-party vendors to ensure compliance with design specifications.
  • Perform mechanical analysis (FEA, thermal simulations) to validate designs under operational conditions.
  • Prepare detailed documentation, drawings, and assembly instructions for fabrication and installation.
  • Support larger-scale assembly projects, ensuring alignment with quality and safety standards.

Essential Skills

  • 5+ years of mechanical design experience.
  • Proficiency in Solidworks.
  • Expertise in mechanical design and fabrication, including sheet metal and structural frame design.
  • Experience with secure mounting of large/heavy assemblies and application of design-for-manufacturing principles.
  • Proven ability to integrate mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Experience in piping, pump, and fan mounting, mechanical layout of electrical components.
  • Understanding of electrical power assemblies, including component function, thermal/vibration considerations, and wire routing.
  • Experienced interfacing with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and customers.
  • Experience in automotive, aerospace, highway equipment, or similar industries.

Assets:

  • Experience with power electronics.
  • Experience with design analysis (e.g., FEA, airflow, temperature).
  • Knowledge of sheet metal design/fabrication.
  • Knowledge of fasteners and secure mounting of large/heavy assemblies.
  • Experience with larger scale assembly projects.

Work Environment

This is a hybrid role, reporting to the Director of Product Development. You will work onsite with the design/development teams to support overall product development. The engineering team consists of approximately 40 people, with 4 dedicated to mechanical design. This is an opportunity to work on state-of-the-art projects in the rail industry, contributing to the development of green-locomotive technology.
