SBM is currently seeking a Mechanical Intern to work with our engineering staff in the Mechanical division of our London office for 16 months starting in May. Candidates will assist with design and modelling of building heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, as well as plumbing and fire protection service distribution, for a variety of residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional projects. Some field work may also be required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Become familiar with design guidelines, standards, and regulations associated with mechanical engineering
  • Preparation of mechanical engineering design and documents ensuring accuracy, adequacy, and conformance to the design requirements
  • Coordinate with other team members on various projects at the same time to achieve project milestones
  • Accept technical guidance from designers, technologists, and senior staff
  • When required, preparation/review of tender/contract documents
  • When required, complete site investigations, general reviews of construction, and preparation of field review reports
  • Work within the project team environment from preliminary stages of the design through to completion
  • Coordinate mechanical aspects of projects with other discipline designs and drawings
Skills / Qualifications:
  • Completed three years towards a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (or equivalent) from an accredited Canadian University, or equivalent, and enrolled to complete the Degree.
  • Eligible for a 16-month co-op / internship registered through your post-secondary school.
  • Experience with Provincial and local Municipality design guidelines, the Ontario Building Code, and other applicable Canadian Engineering standards would be considered an asset
  • A good understanding of building service design
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and AutoCAD suites
  • Familiarity with mechanical design/modelling tools such as Carrier HAP would be considered an asset
  • Experience in building system design and/or construction considered an asset
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Effective team member

  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organization
  • Capable of working on and/or managing several projects at the same time
  • Access to reliable transportation for travel within Ontario, primarily London and surrounding area.
