Municipal & Planning Law Mid-Level Associate

Our client, a longstanding and well-regarded firm in Southern Ontario (Waterloo Region), is seeking a mid-level associate to join its respected Municipal and Planning Law group. This role involves high-impact work across land use, development approvals, and regulatory law, supporting both public-sector institutions and sophisticated private clients.

Core Practice Areas:

  • Planning and development: zoning, site plans, minor variances, and consents
  • Hearings before the Ontario Land Tribunal and related tribunals
  • Expropriation and environmental risk management
  • Tax assessment appeals and regulatory compliance
  • By-law drafting, municipal licensing, and procurement strategy
  • Municipal governance: conflict of interest, election law, and freedom of information

What Theyre Looking For:

  • 5-7+ years of focused experience in municipal, planning, or regulatory law
  • Strong knowledge of the Planning Act and related provincial legislation
  • Demonstrated tribunal and advocacy experience - OLTB or similar settings preferred
  • Sound judgment and ability to provide practical, business-oriented legal advice
  • Comfortable advising diverse stakeholders: municipalities, developers, utilities, and boards

This is an exceptional opportunity for a lawyer who enjoys complex, multidisciplinary matters involving policy, infrastructure, land use, and governance. The team values collegiality, depth of thinking, and the ability to balance public interest with client objectives.

Compensation is competitive and will reflect experience, impact, and any portable work. Inquiries will be held in strict confidence.
