Join us in shaping Canada's sustainable energy futureThe Pembina Institute is seeking an Associate Director for our Strategic Partnerships team, preferably based out of our Vancouver or Edmonton office. However, candidates located in any of our other three offices (Calgary, Toronto, or Ottawa) are welcome to apply. This is a hybrid position.
Come join our Strategic Partnerships team as the Associate Director, where you'll lead fundraising and relationship-building efforts to support the Pembina Institute's mission in advancing Canada's clean energy transition. Working closely with our team of program experts, you'll focus on our Oil & Gas and Buildings priority areas, engaging donors and funders across the charitable, public, and private sectors. Through compelling communication and strategic alignment, you'll influence the philanthropic community, connect donor goals with our vision, and help expand our organizational capacity to drive meaningful impact.Who we areAt the Pembina Institute, it's all hands on deck, and it has been for the last 40 years.
Our 50+ person team, distributed across the country, is passionate and dedicated, but we don't sweat the small stuff. We're too busy tackling one of the most important issues of our time: Canada's clean energy transition.
In that transition, we don't leave anyone behind and believe each member of our team plays a critical role in achieving our goals. We ensure equity but promote individuality. We lead with curiosity — challenging our own ideas and limiting beliefs, and being open to diversity of thought and opinion. We use evidence-based thinking to inform our recommendations to decision-makers and understand that to make long-lasting changes, we need to take a practical approach when collaborating with others.
Our commitment to responsible development, and our “tough but fair” approach, using research, consulting and convening, gives us credibility with decision-makers whose actions today are setting the direction for the planet. Reporting to the Director of Strategic Partnerships, you will lead fundraising efforts and expand our funder base within the Oil & Gas and Buildings priority areas. Your key responsibilities

  • Implement fundraising strategies for assigned portfolios through prospect research, targeted outreach, and relationship stewardship to build and sustain a strong network of funders and stakeholders.
  • Lead the coordination and development of funding proposals and budgets, ensuring alignment with Pembina's strategic priorities and accurate costing of activities in collaboration with internal teams.
  • Support internal program teams on grant reporting processes to meet funder requirements and maintain high-quality standards of communication and accountability.
  • Identify and evaluate new and diversified funding opportunities — including government, corporate, foundation, and individual prospects — to support long-term organizational sustainability.

You build strong relationships and move confidently in a variety of professional settings, demonstrating professionalism and discretion. Self-motivated and results-driven, you take initiative and work independently while maintaining high standards. You bring a strong track record in fundraising with the ability to build relationships with donors, secure philanthropic support, and align funding opportunities with strategic priorities that span across teams and initiatives. What you bring

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proven experience in budget development and financial analysis, with strong proficiency in Microsoft Office and donor database systems.
  • Solid understanding of Canadian fundraising trends, strategies, and practices.
