Position Summary
Reporting to the Associate Dean, the School of Community Studies (SCS) Educational Assistant (EA) works directly with SCS learners, Instructors and Program Chairs to provide educational support related to the programs and courses offered by SCS.
The primary focus of this role is to assist in creating exceptional educational experiences for SCS learners, regardless of their location or the mode of delivery.
Position responsibilities and accountabilities include but are not limited to:
The Educational Assistant (EA) plays a key role in supporting instruction and enhancing the learning experience for learners in the SCS (School of Community Studies). They assist instructors in creating a collaborative and effective instructional team by providing both in-person and virtual classroom support, helping manage course materials and classroom functions, and fostering a positive, engaging environment for learners. EAs maintain regular communication with instructors about learner needs and curriculum delivery, model appropriate academic behaviors, and offer educational assistance to learners who are experiencing challenges. They also provide technical guidance and support for classroom activities, including breakout room facilitation, and work closely with instructors to ensure learners' ongoing growth and achievement.
In addition to classroom support, the EA develops individualized learner program plans to help guide learners through the programs structure and requirements. They collaborate with fellow EAs to organize and deliver extra-curricular workshops that enhance academic success, assist with creating and modifying learning resources to suit diverse learner needs, and work with Learner Success Services to coordinate additional support services, such as Individual Accommodation Plans (IAPs). EAs serve as valuable resources for learners, helping them navigate both academic and community challenges.
The role also includes supporting operational requirements by managing the booking and supervision of in-person assessments and exams and tracks the program completion requirements of the learners. Each term, EAs collaborate with peers and the Associate Dean to develop teamwork coverage schedules.
Other responsibilities include maintaining professional work habits by meeting deadlines, coordinating resources effectively, completing necessary paperwork and task tracking, staying up to date with reference materials, and participating in college, department, and team meetings as required.
Required Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- Post-secondary diploma (preference for Educational Assistant, Disability Studies, and/or Adult Learning). Consideration may be given to an Education Assistant certificate with extensive experience in related professions.
- Two years of experience working with adult learners is an asset.
- Ability to interact in a friendly and patient manner with learners with varied cultural backgrounds, ages, gender identities, levels of English language proficiency, and learners who may require academic accommodations.
- Fluent in spoken and written English.
- Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team.
- Strong organizational, presentation, and time-management skills.
- An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered.
- Ability to travel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Education or other related specialty).
- Experience working with adult learners from beginner to advanced levels, and learners with interrupted formal education.
- Experience working with a diverse group of adults representing multiple cultures, gender identities and ages.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities and/or community-based program delivery.
- Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team.
- Strong organizational, presentation, and time-management skills.
- Ability to recognize variations in learner backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.
- Ability to communicate effectively and assess learners comprehension levels by varying methods.
- Ability to respond to learner writing both holistically and analytically.
- Ability to listen actively and effectively to identify and solve problems, facilitate learning, and build learner confidence.
- Ability to coach and empower learners to be resourceful and think critically.
- Experience working with English language learners at a variety of levels basic literacy to English for academic purposes.
- Experience working with learners with interrupted formal education and demonstrated understanding of the learning needs of this demographic.
- Education or training in cross cultural communication.

This opening is a Temporary Faculty position with an anticipated conclusion in August, 2027.
