About the Innu Round Table Secretariat

The Innu Round Table Secretariat is dedicated to the collective well-being of the Sheshatshiu and Mushuau Innu. Focused on the well-being of Innu children, youth, and families, the Sheshatshiu and Mushuau Innu FirstNations have established Prevention Services as the agency responsible for developing and delivering child and family support services. These services aim to assist families affected by the formal child protection system. The agency is Innu-led, utilizing a holistic approach to wellness, and working towards full Innu jurisdiction over child, youth, and family services.

As part of its growing programs, the agency has developed the Post Majority Support Services (PMSS) initiative, which provides essential support for Innu youth aged 18 to 26 who are transitioning out of care. The goal is to offer a seamless support system addressing needs related to housing, education, mental health, and more.

About the Position

Working full-time in Natuashish and reporting directly to the PMSS Team Lead, this position requires an individual with a Social Work background who is committed to supporting Innu youth in their transition from care. The incumbent will be an integral member of the PMSS team, collaborating closely with PMSS Workers and other community service providers. Together, the team will develop and deliver culturally grounded services to support Innu youth as they navigate critical life transitions.

The Social Worker will play a key role in implementing and refining the PMSS program, ensuring that services are holistic, trauma-informed, and culturally relevant. They will work directly with youth to develop individualized care plans, advocate on their behalf, and connect them with community resources and services. Guided by the principles of the Innu Care Approach, the Social Worker will ensure that all services reflect Innu cultural practices, traditions, and values, fostering a supportive environment for youth to thrive.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct assessments of eligible youth to identify their needs across key service areas.
  • Develop and implement individualized care plans that reflect each youth's goals.
  • Coordinate services with other community providers to ensure holistic care.
  • Contribute to the development of policies, procedures, and culturally relevant interventions for the PMSS program.
  • Assist in program evaluation to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with youth, families, and community stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with local services to create a comprehensive support network.
  • Participate in community events that promote the wellbeing of Innu youth.
  • Incorporate Innu cultural practices into all aspects of service delivery.
  • Facilitate connections between youth and cultural resources such as Elders and knowledge keepers.
  • Promote youth participation in cultural activities and land-based programs.
  • Maintain accurate client records.
  • Prepare reports on client progress and program outcomes.
  • Develop strategies to help maintain cultural connections for youth outside the community.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary degree in Social Work or near completion.
  • Registration with the NLCSW.
  • Clear Code of Conduct and Vulnerable Sector Checks.
  • A valid Drivers License.

Personal Suitability:

  • Strong professional ethics and a commitment to cross-cultural work.
  • Understanding of colonialism and the impacts of intergenerational trauma, especially on Indigenous children in child welfare systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • The ability to exercise good judgment, discretion, and confidentiality.
