The Agency

The Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) is a community-based charitable organization dedicated to reducing the incidence of crime and increasing community safety through preventative and restorative justice practices. To accomplish these ends, we provide direct services to individuals at risk, advocacy for effective responses to crime with the individuals involved and education for youth and adults in the community. The Calgary John Howard Society is committed to an organizational environment that recognizes the dignity and worth of each person. CJHS values diversity and inclusion and welcomes qualified applicants from all walks of life.

The Program

The Youth Reintegration Support Services provides a link to the community for incarcerated youth through the provision of direct assistance, information, advocacy, guidance, and related support. It is aimed towards reducing the negative impact of incarceration and helping with transition by providing appropriate guidance and support that will assist youth during and following their incarceration in order to maximize social inclusion and increase the likelihood of successful community reintegration. A continuum of service is established, beginning in custody, and following a youths release to ensure expedient access to appropriate resources. Ongoing case management support is provided to address needs and assist youth towards attaining stability and independence in the community, thus increasing their likelihood of success.

The Position

Reporting to the Community Outreach and Advocacy Services Team Lead, the Youth Reintegration Caseworker will work collaboratively within the Community Outreach and Advocacy Services Team (COAST) at the agency, and with staff at The Calgary Youth Attendance Centre (CYAC). Using a collaborative approach, the COAST Team provides intensive case management and facilitates wraparound supports to assist with release planning, connection with community supports/resources, employment related support, substance recovery, transportation, and cultural supports. Providing individualized, ongoing, trauma-informed support for individuals while helping them reintegrate into the community is integral to this role.

As an ideal candidate, your qualifications include:

  • Solid case management and social work skills
  • Crisis prevention/intervention skills
  • Knowledge of the Youth Criminal Justice System
  • Valid drivers license and reliable transportation
  • Post-secondary education in a relevant discipline (i.e. human services, child and youth care, etc.)
  • Brain Story Certification considered an asset.

A current criminal record check (CPIC), within the past three months is required. A criminal record would not automatically disqualify you from employment with us, we review all applicants on a case-by-case basis.
