About the Role:

This position supports the work of the YMCA of Northern Alberta, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Youth Coordinator supports the supervision and implementation of Youth Programming at the Northside Community Centre YMCA, including youth outreach programs. Youth programs comprise, but are not limited to, collaboration with other agencies, Youth Centre Drop In program, Teen Night, and the Skatepark Mentorship program as well as community events. The Youth Coordinator will act as positive role model for staff, volunteers, community members, and participants embracing the YMCA of Northern Alberta's core values of Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Caring, and Inclusion. The successful candidate will support the Youth Supervisor in building and training a team of Youth Centre Workers and Skatepark Mentors to effectively run youth-focused programs and initiatives that aim to help youth build the skills necessary for managing the challenges they face.

This position requires use of a vehicle and must be able to support a schedule that includes working shifts of days, afternoons, evenings, and some weekends based on program and staffing needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Support in the recruitment and coordination of youth centre workers (staff) and volunteers both in centre and out in the community.
  • Support the Supervisor in coaching and managing staff that oversee youth programming during program hours.
  • Supervise youth during programming, manage behavior in accordance with the Child/Youth Behavior Management and Abuse policy. Participant etiquette is to be monitored and reinforced. Challenging behaviors are addressed in a people first approach with the goal of facilitating a positive return to program.
  • Work with the Supervisor in overseeing, planning, and implementing activities and initiatives for youth which include special events and youth outreach opportunities meeting the youth where they are at.
  • Provide opportunities for youth to learn and develop in spirit, mind and body. Consistently role model and encourage YMCA's values and mission, encourage a healthy lifestyle, participation of others by helping out by their respective means, enrich the quality of programs and services.
  • Sharing critical information with youth including special events, behavioral expectations, NCC policies and Youth Centre updates.
  • Effective communication with the Youth Supervisor and Leadership Team both at offsite locations and at Northside Community Centre (NCC) to complete required tasks.
  • Accountable to deliver high quality services through excellent relationships with youth, staff, and volunteers.
  • Complete Duty Manager training assigned by Supervisor.
  • Support daily operations of NCC (when onsite) and support operations of programs/initiatives taking place at offsite locations.
  • Works with the Youth Supervisor to engage with the other organizations, schools, community agencies, and community partners to maximize services and resources to participants.
  • Maintain knowledge of resources and opportunities within the community for youth and families.
  • Consults with social workers, school administration, other professionals and family/natural supports when appropriate as assigned by the Youth Supervisor.
  • Sharing critical information with youth parent(s)/guardian(s) as required while reporting back to Youth Supervisor and Leadership team.
  • Adheres to all Risk Management and Occupational Health and Safety requirements including Work Alone Policy and Procedures and the Children, Youth and Vulnerable Adults Protection Policies and Procedures.
  • Comply with the Centre's emergency response and procedures by; ensuring staff and volunteers are trained accordingly, participating in an annual review of emergency procedures, act as needed to ensure a safe work environment for staff, volunteers, community members, and participants.
  • Act as a first responder to health and safety issues.
  • Notify the Duty Manager and/or leadership team if any emergency or serious problems arise.
  • Effective communication with other staff and volunteers including documentation of issues, critical incidents, equipment/maintenance issues and daily review of staff communication log.
  • Ensure administrative duties related to youth programming are accurately and effectively completed as assigned by the Supervisor (e.g., survey tracking, budgeting, incident reporting & follow-up, etc.).
  • Collect demographic, output and outcome data for evaluation purposes and to inform and contribute to the development of funder and YMCA reports.
  • Support the completion of administrative tasks that includes, but not limited to, program plans, data tracking, survery collection and analysis.
  • Actively participate and engage with youth. Which includes but not limited to running, jumping, lifting and carrying heavy objects.
  • Make sure YMCA equipment is being inspected by staff and volunteers and appropriate actions are taken to maintain it.
  • Work within defined and allocated budgets.
  • Complete other duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 18+ years of age
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Previous Youth work and mentorship or related experience
  • Previous coaching and/or facilitating experience
  • Certifications: Standard First Aid & CPR-C
  • Able to obtain a Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Must obtain employer specific WHMIS and Child Protection Training within 30 days of hire date
