Reporting directly to the Deputy Fire Chief, Fire Inspections, this position provides support with the strategic direction, leadership, and management of North Cowichan's Fire Services. The Assistant Chief, Inspector is a key operational role within the Fire Department, responsible for conducting fire inspections, investigations, building inspections and ensuring compliance with fire safety regulations. This position actively performs fire prevention duties, assesses risks, works directly with emergency response teams to enhance public safety and assists in fire safety education. Performs other tasks as required.

Hours of work may vary to accommodate operational requirements such as meetings, training schedules, and paid on-call firefighter availability.

Required Skills, Qualifications, and Abilities:

  1. Relevant post-secondary education augmented by completion of Basic Firefighting certifications, NFPA 1021 Fire Inspector 1, BC Fire Code Course, Fire Cause Origin 2, ICS 200, Fire and Life Safety Educator 1
  2. Minimum eight (8) years of experience as a Fire Officer in a leadership role.
  3. EMA First Responder license (current).
  4. Experience working in a public sector, local government environment.
  5. Knowledge of Incident Command System principles and practices.
  6. Knowledge of the current firefighting and fire protection practices.
  7. Knowledge of the operation of firefighting equipment and apparatus.
  8. Knowledge of applicable acts or regulations affecting fire fighter safety.
  9. Knowledge of Department policies, guidelines, rules and regulations.
  10. Ability to organize, plan, and coordinate divisional operations.
  11. Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence with air brake endorsement; a satisfactory current driver's abstract will be required.
  12. Ability to build effective relationships with all stakeholders and the public.
  13. Effective communication skills and a leader of innovation and change.
  14. The position may be physically demanding; candidate must be able to successfully perform all duties associated with the position. A medical certificate attesting to suitability for this position may be required.
  15. Demonstrable skills in presentation and report writing.
  16. The ability to communicate complex information to a diverse group of people in an easy-to-understand manner.

The ideal candidate for this position will maintain a successful police information check, including a vulnerable sector check. A competitive salary and comprehensive benefit package is offered. This position is excluded from union membership.
