The Remote Medic (certified Advanced Care Paramedic, or ACP) provides on-site medical care adherent to PRAXES standards and within their scope of practice. As both a medical care provider and representative of the Company, they act as bridge between PRAXES and its clients to ensure high standards of care are met in a professional manner. In doing so, the Remote Medic maintains active communication with their Supervisors and where applicable, consults PRAXES physicians for additional support. Remote Medics are expected to document each case thoroughly within the PRAXES Connect EMR system. They also are responsible for the proper storage and management of medical inventory, including medications and supplies. They are also prepared to submit regular summary reports as requested.

This is role performed on-site aboard the Marine Atlantic ferry. The schedule is on a rotating basis, with a minimum of 6 days at a time and includes overnights, weekends, and holidays. The duration of contract is June 13 to mid-September (TBC) 2025.

A single-occupancy cabin and travel subsidy is provided. Meals provided while on board ferry. Compensation is reimbursed at a daily rate of $600 on a contractor basis (sick/vacation pay and benefits, etc are not applicable).

Responsibilities:

Patient Care:

  • Provide all services in a professional manner and always function within your scope of practice.
  • Provide medical care to PRAXES standards.
  • Follow and adhere to PRAXES standard operating procedures and medical protocols.
  • Maintain thorough and concise medical documentation of all patient contact events using the PRAXES Connect emergency medical record system, with paper charts if needed.
  • Call the PRAXES EMdoc for medical support as per the PRAXES Medical Directives.

PRAXES Representative:

  • Remember at all times that you represent PRAXES to the Client(s) at the remote location and therefore you are a company representative as well as a medical professional.
  • Need to communicate with both PRAXES and the Client to make sure that Clients needs are met.
  • If anyone at the Client site asks you to perform a task that you are not comfortable performing, always check in with your Supervisor first.

Clinic Management:

  • Organize and securely store all medications, supplies, and equipment
  • Regularly check medical supplies, inventories, and reorder stock as needed.
  • Maintain the onsite clinic in a professional manner including regularly inspecting all medical equipment to ensure proper operation and perform any maintenance required.

Reporting:

  • If required, complete the weekly OH Summary report every week, summarizing clinic activity from Monday to Sunday and send it to the Operations Manager on Monday morning. The OH Clinic Summary report can be generated within PRAXES Connect or manually on paper.
  • Report as required, but at least on a weekly basis with your PRAXES supervisor.
  • Report as required to your on-site supervisor.
  • Request advice from your supervisor for any requests for the on-site client that are beyond your knowledge, skills, or authority.

Skills and Qualifications:

Must-have:

  • Licensed to practice as an Advanced Care Paramedic in Nova Scotia.
  • Strong knowledge of Medical equipment, supplies, and medication
  • Inspection skills
  • Knowledge of occupational health requirements
  • Understanding of quality management systems.

Personnel Profile:

  • Good communicator and listener.
  • Good team player works well with other staff, keeps others informed about key issues.
  • Adaptable and flexible able to shift priorities quickly and willingly as warranted by the situation.
  • Energetic and helpful manner customer service focus.
  • Takes personal responsibility for their work.
  • Able to work independently but understands how and when to keep PRAXES informed of key issues and events at the remote site.

Nice to Have:

  • Previous experience working on remote sites, vessels and/or marine environments.
  • Any one or combination of certifications in: ACLS, PALS, ITLS.
