What Are We Looking For?

  • Position Title: Child & Youth Development Worker (Child-minding support)
  • Job Type: Part-time (20 hours/week) – Term specific - May 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025
  • Department: Integrated Support Services
  • Reports to: Manager, Integrated Support Services

Position Overview

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated part-time Child & Youth Development Worker to join our team at Inn from the Cold. As a member of the Child and Youth Development team and reporting directly to the Manager of Integrated Support Services, the primary duty of the part-time Child & Youth Worker is to support scheduled and emergent childminding services for shelter families. This role will support parents/guardians in the Shelter when they meet with case managers or external professionals, require brief parenting respite and attend workshops.

What You'll Do

  • Provide scheduled childminding for families in the shelter, including emergent childminding when requested
  • Develop working relationships with families and model positive relationships and boundaries with parent-child interactions
  • Provide support when needed to put together welcome boxes and organize activities for families when they arrive at the shelter
  • Assist in facilitating regular activities for children, youth and parents/guardians
  • Engage with families and observe children and youth for signs of learning challenges or emotional needs and provide updates to the CYD Case Manager
  • Work collaboratively with the CYD team and volunteers
  • Work with the CYD Case Manager to assist parents in establishing routines for children and support with positive guidance
  • Clearly and effectively communicate in a manner that children and youth understand
  • Adhere to family information confidentiality policies and procedures.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation and case notes of support provided to families using established systems – HOMES, TEAMS, Program Drive folders

This position description reflects the general duties of the role, but is not intended to include all duties that may be inherent in the position. The part-time Child & Youth Development Worker may be asked to perform other duties as required or assigned.

What You Bring to Our Mission

  • Early Childhood Education Diploma (Levels 1,2 or 3) or relevant education in the human services field
  • Two years' experience working with children and families with a strong focus on parenting strategies
  • Ability to successfully work with children and their parents in a sensitive, effective and professional manner
  • Working knowledge of child development theories and practices
  • Ability to create safe and appropriate activities for children
  • Computer literacy, including effective working skills in MS Word, Excel and e-mail
  • Good organizational, time management and prioritization skills
  • Strong work ethics, sound judgement and reasoning skills, along with a commitment to discretion and family and staff confidentiality
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse working environment
  • Physically able to interact in play settings with children and perform all assigned tasks
