Job Title: Superintendent, Health and Safety

Reporting to the Manager, Health & Safety or their designate, the Superintendent, Health and Safety is responsible for leading the development, implementation, continuous improvement, and execution of Skeena Resources' safety program. This role will work directly with site personnel, contractors, and various stakeholders to ensure safe operations and continuous improvement in the health and safety space.

The Superintendent, Health and Safety is one of the primary resources to drive Skeena's operational safety program at field sites and development project activities. This position manages and develops the safety program at Eskay Creek mine site.

Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Directly supervise Health & Safety Advisors, Medical team, Mountain Safety team
  • Provide leadership and training of on-site Emergency Response Team
  • Provide Crisis Management Training for all members of site Emergency Operations Center and Corporate Team (Incident Command System)
  • Act as Incident Commander for emergency response when required
  • Conduct and support incident investigations with and identify corrective actions required to prevent reoccurrence
  • Conduct & coordinate visible felt leadership field visits
  • Conduct and respond to Ministry of Energy, Mines & Low Carbon Innovation (EMLI) inspections and requests
  • Ensure QA/QC for all incidents entered into site incident management system including assigning incidents to correct workflows
  • Provide incident investigation training for all new and existing supervision/management
  • Manage Learning Management System (LMS)
  • Coordinate regulatory required training (Fall protection, confined space, Mobile Elevated Work Platform ect.)
  • Manage return to work/injury management program and WorkSafeBC injury reporting requirements

The Ideal Candidate:

Academic/Education Requirements:

  • Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety

Required Skills/Experience:

  • 7 plus (7+) years of directly related Health and Safety Management experience or equivalent combination of experience is required, preferably within the mining or resources sector.
  • Experience in major projects and mining construction is preferred
  • Working knowledge of BC HSRC, WCB and Worksafe BC guidance and rules
  • Previous experience working with the Tahltan, Nisga'a, Skii km Lax Ha, and/or Gitanyow Nations is highly desired.
  • Experience with LMS and Incident Management software
  • Strong computer skills using MS office suite is required.
  • Knowledge of mining methods, safety regulations and safety engineering
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must possess very strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Leadership attributes to influence and persuade a course of action with multiple competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated capability and experience working with Indigenous governments/communities including history, protocols, values, and governance and implementing those values is considered an asset.

Work Location & Conditions

This is a site-based camp job at Eskay Creek Mine site. This position involves working at a remote mine site on a 15 days on/13 days off rotation including travel. Given this is a manager-level position, periodic travel to the Skeena corporate office in Vancouver may be required.

The Eskay Creek Revitalization Project is located within the Coast Mountains of Northwestern British Columbia and Tahltan Territory. Ground transportation will be provided from local communities to the Eskay Creek Site facilities. For those applicants located elsewhere in western Canada, flight transportation from major urban centers will be provided to the Terrace or Smithers airports, from which shuttles will provide transportation to the Eskay Creek Camp facilities. Travel time and expenses are subject to Skeena's Travel Policy.

There will be exposure to extreme temperatures in all seasons including working outdoors in snow, mud, ice, and water conditions, walking to and from different locations on uneven ground, prolonged periods of standing and physically handling/lifting/moving heavy objects.
