We are hiring for a Water/Wastewaster Operator Class II. Please be advised that In the event we are not able to fill the position with Class II Operator, consideration will be given to fill the position with a Class I Operator and/or Operator-In-Training (OIT).

Position Purpose:

Responsible for the operation and maintenance of water booster stations, watermains, hydrants and valves, as well as the sewage pumping stations and sanitary sewers. For full details, please see attached job descriptions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • For minimum qualifications for Operator Class I, Operator Class II, and OIT, please see attached job description.
  • Valid Class 'G' Driver's license;
  • Driver's Abstract in good standing required to operate Corporation vehicles;
  • Police Vulnerable Sector Check deemed as satisfactory by the Town

Position Summary

Responsible for the operation and maintenance of water booster stations, watermains, hydrants and valves, as well as the sewage pumping stations and sanitary sewers.

Responsibilities

Water/Wastewater Operator I, Water/Wastewater Operator II, Operator in Training (OIT)

  • Conducts daily inspections of sewage pumping stations and booster stations, recording and monitoring results.
  • Water Quality Sampling. Perform regulatory sampling for lead, THM's, microbiological and chlorine residuals.
  • Watermain Flushing.
  • Perform utility (water, wastewater, storm) locates.
  • Respond and investigate sewer backups and storm flooding.
  • Visual inspection of sanitary manhole, storm manhole and valve chambers.
  • Repairs to the watermain distribution system and wastewater collection system.
  • Hydrant meter service and installation.
  • Fire flow testing.
  • Perform inspection and corrective maintenance of valves throughout the system.
  • Repair and install sewer and water services to property lines as necessary.
  • Liaises with contractors and the public during the installation of water and sewer services and conducts inspections for compliance with municipal standards and all applicable health and safety regulations.
  • Conducts visual inspections of sewer and manholes and corrects/repairs any noted deficiencies.
  • Flushes sewers and removes debris as necessary.
  • Maintains logs such as inspection records and CVOR, track work, prepare reports and perform data entry for various inventories both manually and electronically.
  • Enters confined spaces as required.
  • Provides detailed accounts and reports for accidents, incidents, etc. to aid in liability investigations of the Corporation.
  • Responds to enquiries and/or resolves complaints from the general public and contractors regarding matters related to public works.
  • Participates in the Town's Health & Safety Program and complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, other applicable legislation and best practices.
  • Maintains knowledge of and adheres to all Town of Georgina Policies and Procedures.
  • Participates in ongoing Training and Development; ensures all mandatory requirements are met and maintained.

Additional duties:

  • Water/Wastewater Operator I and II will participate in rotating stand-by.
  • Water/Wastewater Operator I and II can act as Operator-In-Charge (OIC)

Minimum Qualifications

Water/Wastewater Operator I

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have obtained a mark that the Director considers satisfactory in an examination approved by the Director relating to the functions performed by operators with Class I Licences for a municipal residential subsystem.
  • One year of experience as an operator-in-training in municipal water/wastewater, or underground utility construction or equivalent, and including six (6) months in a public sector environment.
  • Ministry of the Environment Certificates of Competency in Water Distribution and Wastewater Collections Systems Class I and commitment to obtaining Class II Water Distribution and Class II Wastewater Collection System Certificates of Competency and Licence.
  • Ministry of the Environment Wastewater Collection Licences and Water Distribution Class II Licences considered an asset.
  • Confined Space certificate is considered an asset; otherwise we will provide training.
  • Ontario College Diploma in a related field is considered an asset.
  • Previous experience working in a computerized environment (Computer Maintenance Management System, GPS, etc.) is considered an asset.

Water/Wastewater Operator II

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have obtained a mark that the Director considers satisfactory in an examination approved by the Director relating to the functions performed by operators with Class II Licences for that type of subsystem.
  • Two (2) additional years of experience gained following obtaining Level I Licences.
  • Class II Water Distribution and Class II Wastewater Collection System Certificates of Competency and Licence;
  • Ministry of the Environment Wastewater Collection Licences and Water Distribution Class II Licences considered an asset;
  • Confined Space certificate is considered an asset; otherwise we will provide training;
  • Ontario College Diploma in a related field is considered an asset;
  • Previous experience working in a computerized environment (Computer Maintenance Management System, GPS, etc.) is considered an asset

Operator in Training

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have obtained a mark that the Director considers satisfactory in an examination approved by the Director relating to the functions performed by operators-in-training.
  • Successful completion of a course of study approved by the Director relating to the functions performed by operators-in-training and must have obtained a mark in that course that the Director considers satisfactory.
  • Certified Operator-in-Training and commitment to obtaining Class II Water Distribution and Class II Wastewater Collection System Certificates of Competency and Licence.
  • Confined Space certificate is considered an asset; otherwise we will provide training.
  • Ontario College Diploma in a related field is considered an asset.
  • Previous experience working in a computerized environment (Computer Maintenance Management System, GPS, etc.) is considered an asset.

Knowledge

  • Thorough working knowledge of municipal water and wastewater operations and installations;
  • Knowledge of associated safety regulations and standards;
  • Knowledge and experience with SCADA, GIS and work management systems considered an asset;
  • Knowledge of underground utilities and construction techniques;
  • Knowledge of Confined Space Standards;
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations;
  • Thorough understanding of Ministry of the Environment Regulations;
  • Knowledge of equipment, methods, tools and materials used in the operation and maintenance of water and wastewater systems and pumping stations

Competencies

  • Good communication organizational and problem solving skills;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public, Town staff and contractors;
  • Ability to interpret work orders, specifications, standards, instructions, drawings, etc.;
  • Availability to work weekends and/or evenings and be on stand-by on a rotating basis and as required;
  • Valid Class 'G' Driver's license;
  • Driver's Abstract in good standing required to operate Corporation vehicles;
  • Contractor and crew oversight.
  • Maintain and keep legible documentation.
  • Requires satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Search.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Daily travel;
