Summary

St. Margaret's School (SMS) is Western Canada's only girl-centered, independent day and boarding school located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on the unceded traditional territories of the Esquimalt Nations, Songhees Nations, and W̱SÁNEĆ Nations. Founded in 1908, SMS is an international centre for girl-centered learning and leadership development, providing empowering education for girls from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 (boarding grades 7–12). St. Margaret's School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) School offering the Diploma Program.

Through coordination with teachers, administrators, and the IB Regional Office, the IB Middle Years Programme Coordinator (Grades 6-10) provides pedagogical and administrative leadership for the programme and is responsible for the full delivery of the IB MYP curriculum at SMS, including documentation, reporting, analysis and evaluation. The MYP Coordinator takes the lead in creating and maintaining a balanced programme of inquiry, leading the learning, and ensuring adherence to the policies and procedures of the IB.

The Middle Years Programme Coordinator character and capacities are guided by the IB Learner Profile and the IB Approaches to Teaching and Learning.

Duties and Responsibilities

General Duties

  • Ensure that the IB MYP Programme is aligned with the programme standards and practices and general rules of the IB. Maintain complete academic records and documentation for programme evaluation purposes.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Curriculum and the other IB Coordinators, plan collaboration and individual/group professional learning, including the organization of on-site professional development related to the MYP.
  • Identify MYP-related professional development opportunities for faculty and keep a record of workshop attendance and school visits to ensure equality of opportunity to identify ongoing needs, and to complete authorization and program evaluation forms.
  • Supervise the overall IB MYP curriculum.
  • Lead regular IB MYP meetings with faculty.
  • Support specialist teachers in their unique roles as they deliver the MYP.
  • Support implementation of MYP best practices in classrooms through modeling and co-planning of lessons and units.
  • Engage in class observations and make recommendations for best practices.
  • Take the lead in subject group, ATL and service as action planning and discussions.
  • Ensure differentiation is provided in the classroom, including liaising with the Personalized Learning and Enrichment Team.
  • Encourage an inquiry-based learning environment within the school community.
  • Read and edit student progress reports.
  • Maintain communication with the IB Regional Office related to the MYP programme.
  • Maintain up-to-date understanding of IB programming, direction and research outcomes.
  • Support the development and documentation of SMS IB MYP curriculum.
  • Conduct regular collaborative meetings with IB MYP teachers and support staff.
  • Awareness and understanding of the social/emotional needs of girls.
  • Superior communication, organizational and interpersonal skills in working with colleagues and parents.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Assessment and Documentation responsibilities

  • Play an active role in planning and facilitating the MYP Personal Project, including supporting the teachers responsible for, and the students involved in, the MYP Personal Project.
  • Be familiar with and promote understanding and use of all MYP documents.
  • Ensure that faculty have access to IB publications pertaining to the MYP.
  • Establish and maintain a record of completed IB Middle Years Program planners.
  • Ensure school publications represent the MYP accurately, updating as required.
  • With the collaboration of the other IB Coordinators and the Director of Curriculum, lead the process of developing and reviewing on a regular basis the school's curriculum documents.
  • Ensure that policies are formulated, published and reviewed regularly in regard to assessment and language learning as per the IB Program standards and practices.
  • Encourage and promote the understanding and practice of academic honesty.
  • Ensure the development of an action plan driven by the practices and program requirements included in the Program standards and practices and identify clear timelines, accountabilities and outcomes regarding the ongoing development of the programme, including a demonstrated commitment to professional development.

IB MYP Communication and Support responsibilities

  • Set up systems for communication and collaboration among all staff members involved in implementing the program.
  • Prepare communications for administration and the school community on IB organization developmental progress and changes.
  • Develop and deliver IB MYP informational sessions with current and prospective parents.
  • Ensure teachers are aware of school IB MYP policies.
  • Share articles and information related to the MYP.
  • Circulate all relevant information received from IB and keep staff up-to-date with current developments in the programme.
  • Respond to requests for information from the IB.
  • Provide outreach opportunities to the wider MYP community.
  • Meet regularly with the IB Coordinators, Director of Curriculum and other educational leaders to identify priorities, set goals and develop work plans.
  • Work with the Personalized Learning and Enrichment Team to coordinate support where necessary.
  • Ensure regular communication with parents and guardians.

Required Education & Experience

  • Current and valid Teacher Certification through the Teacher Regulation Branch
  • Experience and advocacy working within an IB learning environment an asset, or the drive and willingness to learn and engage in related professional development.
  • Experience teaching in an upper Middle Years (Grades 7-10) environment.
  • Exemplary teaching with a deep understanding of inquiry-based teaching and learning.
  • Role within the IBEN (IB Educator Network) would be considered an asset.
  • A deep understanding of the BC curriculum.
