The Health and Wellness Lab in the Faculty of Kinesiology invites applications for a Research Assistant - Summer Student. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 4month (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Health and Wellness Lab (HWL) is located in the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary. The HWL studies the role of exercise for those living with cancer. This includes a focus on implementation research, evaluating programs effectiveness in real-world settings.

The Research Assistant will report to Dr. Nicole Culos-Reed, Professor Faculty of Kinesiology . The primary purpose of this position is to support our exercise oncology programs (EXCEL, ACE, IMPACT). However, this is a dynamic role where the incumbent is expected to work on multiple research projects concurrently in environment where there is continuous change. The RA will support staff and students on programs, based on research and/or clinical protocols set by Dr. Culos-Reed. RA duties will involve client/participant intake, scheduling, testing, data entry and management, and providing written and verbal feedback in weekly updates to the Director. The RA will have research experience, knowledge of the healthcare setting, and prior work with patients. This role requires frequent interaction with research participants, as well as with other staff, students and interdepartmental teams; therefore, strong communication skills are required.

This position is for 4 months, May-August 2024 for a summer student.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Develop and maintain Health and Wellness resources, including education and programming, to support exercise oncology participants
  • Appropriately schedule candidates for inclusion in the program and schedule assessment and follow-up appointments
  • Support CEPs (staff and students) who conduct the aerobic and functional fitness exercise testing as a second assessor and data entry
  • Support individual/group exercise sessions delivery as a moderator
  • Follow-up with participants to ensure they are keeping to their programs and provide modifications to their program, if necessary
  • Support exercise testing, according to the research-based protocol, of cancer survivors
  • Ability to support testing, format programming results from testing
  • Data entry for all tests and report back to the client and the Director

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree in Kinesiology or similar health science degree required
  • Expertise in supporting health behaviour change
  • Current CPR and First Aid Training
  • WHMIS safety course certifications
  • Required experience working with clinical populations.
  • High level of effective organizational, time and personal initiative skills, teamwork, accuracy and strong attention to detail
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills
  • Strong social media skills
