The municipal government of The City of Saint John employs approximately 700 full-time employees among its five departments and numerous divisions.  It is an inclusive workplace in an interesting geographic and historic city with space to explore, offering professional challenges.  It has competitive wages and benefits, and is a strong supporter of continuous learning, both internally and externally.  A City-manager based organization, policy and direction is established by the elected Council.

Saint John, the largest city in New Brunswick and the commercial centre of the province, is Canada's first incorporated city, having been established by Royal Charter in 1785 during the reign of King George III.  The city is located on the northern shore of the Bay of Fundy and stands on a high peninsula overlooking the harbour and the St. John River.  Here at Saint John was written much of Canada's early history.  The site on which Saint John stands was discovered by the famous French explorer Samuel de Champlain, who was with Sieur de Monts' expedition commissioned by France's King Henry IV.

In addition to being Canada's first incorporated city, Saint John enjoys many other "firsts".  It was at Saint John in 1785 that Canada's first common-law market was established, and still operates today; in 1838 that the first penny newspaper in the British Empire was published; in 1842, the first public museum opened and continues its operations today as the New Brunswick Museum; in 1854, the first steam fog horn in the world was erected on Partridge Island in Saint John Harbour; and the first steam saw mill was started on July 9, 1852.

Le premier journal à un sou de l’Empire britannique y a été publié en 1838. En 1842, on y a ouvert le premier musée public, qui existe toujours aujourd’hui sous le nom de Musée du Nouveau‑Brunswick. On a érigé en 1854 la première corne de brume à vapeur sur l’île Partridge dans le port de Saint John et la première scierie à vapeur y a démarré ses activités le 9 juillet 1852.
