Position Summary
The Veterinary Assistant Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction within the Veterinary Assistant diploma program in accordance with Nova Scotia Private Career Colleges (PCC) regulations and Department of Advanced Education requirements. The instructor ensures students achieve required learning outcomes through engaging instruction, practical skills development, and academic support aligned with current industry standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver instruction aligned with approved program curriculum and learning outcomes
- Provide theory and practical training relevant to veterinary assistant practice
- Evaluate student performance, assignments, and practical competencies
- Maintain accurate academic records including attendance, grades, and progress reports
- Support students during practicum/OJT preparation and employer communication as required
- Ensure compliance with PCC standards, institutional policies, and regulatory requirements
- Maintain professional currency in veterinary assisting practices and industry standards
- Collaborate with academic administration to support student success and program delivery
Instructor Qualifications & Registration Requirements (PCC Nova Scotia Compliance)
To be eligible for instructor registration with the Nova Scotia Private Career Colleges Division, applicants must meet one or more of the following criteria:
- A bachelor's degree in a related field and at least 1 year of directly related occupational experience; or
- A college diploma/certificate in a related field and at least 2 years of directly related occupational experience; or
- A Bachelor of Education degree or valid Nova Scotia teaching certificate and at least 2 years of directly related occupational experience; or
- Equivalent combination of education and directly related occupational experience acceptable to the Director under PCC regulations
Additional Requirements:
- Demonstrated current and directly related occupational experience in veterinary assisting, animal health, or veterinary clinical practice specifically with Office procedures and experience with the Veterinary Software, cloud-based software (Neo by IDEXX).
- Strong instructional, communication, and student engagement skills
- Proficiency with MS Office and learning management systems (LMS)
- Commitment to student-centered learning and regulatory compliance
- Ability to work independently in a contract-based instructional environment
Preferred Assets
- RVT, CVT, or equivalent veterinary clinical certification (if applicable)
- Prior teaching, mentoring, or training experience in a post-secondary or clinical setting
- Experience supervising students in practicum or on-the-job training environments
