Position Philosophy

Under the direction and supervision of the Food Service Manager, the Kitchen Helper is responsible for supporting the delivery of safe, nutritious, and appealing meals to residents while contributing to a warm and welcoming dining environment.

The Kitchen Helper plays an important role in creating a "human habitat" by working respectfully and collaboratively with residents, coworkers, families, and visitors. This position supports resident dignity, choice, and quality of life through the provision of clean, safe food service and assistance with meal preparation and service.

Position Description

Reporting to the Food Service Manager, the Kitchen Helper is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and sanitation within the kitchen and dining areas, assisting with food preparation, receiving and storing supplies, and supporting the overall food service operation.

This role ensures that all work is completed in accordance with food safety standards, infection prevention and control practices, and established policies and procedures. The Kitchen Helper contributes to efficient kitchen operations and supports the team in providing high-quality meal service to residents .

Responsibilities:

Dishwashing & Sanitation

• Wash dishes, pots, pans, utensils, and food service equipment using manual and/or mechanical dishwashing methods

• Ensure proper cleaning, sanitizing, and storage of all dishware and equipment

• Maintain cleanliness of kitchen surfaces, work areas, and dishwashing stations

• Follow all food safety and sanitation guidelines

Food Preparation Support

• Assist with basic food preparation (e.g., washing, peeling, cutting, portioning) as directed

• Support plating and portioning of meals and snacks

• Prepare beverages, simple items, and nourishments as assigned

• Follow standardized recipes and instructions from the Food Service Manager

Receiving & Storage

• Assist with receiving food deliveries and supplies

• Check and verify deliveries against invoices/orders

• Ensure proper labeling, dating, and storage of food items (FIFO practices)

• Report discrepancies, damaged goods, or concerns

Kitchen & Dining Area Maintenance

• Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment, appliances, and high-touch surfaces

• Maintain floors, garbage areas, and storage spaces in a clean and safe condition

• Assist in setting up and clearing dining areas as required

• Ensure garbage and recycling are handled according to policy

Infection Prevention & Food Safety

• Follow all food safety regulations and infection control practices

• Adhere to PPE requirements and outbreak protocols when required

• Maintain personal hygiene and safe food handling practices at all times

Teamwork & Communication

• Follow direction from the Food Service Manager, Cook, or designate

• Work collaboratively with kitchen staff, nursing, and other team members

• Communicate respectfully with residents, families, and staff

• Respond to requests for assistance in a timely manner

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred

• Food Handler Certification required or willingness to obtain

• Previous experience in food service, healthcare, or long-term care is an asset

• Knowledge of basic food safety and sanitation practices

• Ability to follow instructions, routines, and schedules

• Strong teamwork and communication skills

• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
