­GIS Specialist

­Key Responsibilities:

  • Receive, triage, document, and complete GIS service requests such as map production, data updates, training support, technical support, contractor access support, and application/data troubleshooting;
  • Create, maintain, validate, and document geospatial datasets, metadata, attributes, schemas, and related quality-control processes to keep business-critical GIS information accurate and current;
  • Produce maps, web maps, dashboards, and spatial analyses that communicate asset, field, environmental, access, inspection, construction, and planning information in a clear and usable format;
  • Support ArcGIS tools and applications, including ArcGIS Online/Hub, Survey123, Dashboards, Experience Builder, ArcGIS Pro, mobile GIS apps, and related NL Hydro GIS service portals;
  • Work with engineering, operations, field crews, contractors, project managers, and internal customers to understand requirements, translate needs into GIS outputs, and explain results to technical and non-technical audiences;
  • Apply GIS standards, naming conventions, data access controls, documentation practices, and continuous-improvement ideas that improve the reliability and value of NL Hydro GIS services;
  • Collect, compile, edit, convert, and integrate GIS data from field observations, drawings, spreadsheets, surveys, imagery, as-built records, and other authoritative sources;
  • Perform spatial analysis, data validation, topology checks, attribute review, and map production to support capital projects, asset management, inspections, access planning, emergency response, and stakeholder reporting;
  • Configure, maintain, and publish web maps, hosted feature layers, Survey123 forms, dashboards, and Experience Builder / Hub content for internal GIS service delivery;
  • Create clear cartographic products and visualizations for field use, technical review, management reporting, public or stakeholder communication, and project documentation;
  • Provide first-level GIS support and coaching to internal users, including account requests, access questions, software/app use, data interpretation, and service request follow-up;
  • Maintain GIS documentation, data dictionaries, service request notes, workflow records, and reusable templates that improve consistency and continuity;
  • Coordinate with IT, business units, contractors, and GIS administrators on access, licensing, security, data sharing, and application support matters.

What We're Looking For:

  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills to foster effective working relationships with members of various teams;
  • Excellent analytical skills and problem solving abilities.

What You'll Need:

  • Diploma or degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geomatics, Geography, Environmental Science, Engineering Technology, Computer Science, or a related discipline; equivalent combinations of education and directly related experience may be considered;
  • Experience creating, maintaining, analyzing, and publishing GIS data and maps in an enterprise or operational environment;
  • Demonstrated competence with Esri GIS tools such as ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online; experience with Survey123, Dashboards, Experience Builder, Hub, or mobile GIS applications is an asset.
  • Ability to manage tabular and spatial data, apply quality-control checks, troubleshoot data issues, and create clear maps/reports for business users;
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • Must be willing to work highly remote areas at times;
  • Must be able to spend prolonged time in field conditions, which include adverse weather conditions and rough terrain;
  • Valid Driving License for driving Site Vehicles including Pick Ups, Snow Mobiles and Quads;
  • Should be able to travel by Airplane/Helicopter;
  • Sporadic travel to various remote Hydro related infrastructure sites is required.
