The Mental Health & Addictions Program offers health promotion and prevention, urgent and emergent, rehabilitation, and continuing care services to children, youth and adults in acute care, community, and correctional health settings. Services range from assessment, counselling, detoxification, treatment and follow-up to rehabilitation, housing, case management and leisure programming. We are located at various hospital and community sites, in urban and rural settings, throughout the eastern region.

Job Summary
The Behaviour Management Specialist works in the new Mental Health and Addictions Centre (MHAC) as a member of the Mental Health Team. The main purpose of this position is to support staff and family members by offering advanced knowledge, training, and recommendations so they can effectively support individuals with their recovery who are diagnosed with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities and are experiencing behavioral challenges.

The Behaviour Management Specialist is an advanced position that will play a role in enhancing patient safety in an inpatient setting by supporting education and training initiatives for staff and family members, and providing recommendations for environmental enhancement to facilitate patients’ overall development and maintenance of current skills in activities of daily living.

Occasionally lifts objects less than 10 lbs and rearranges furniture between 10-25 lbs for staff meetings, trainings and family consultation.
Regularly conducts care plans, and recommendation reports and is required to use a computer and sit for long periods.
Fine finger/precision work is required on a regular basis.
A high level of attentiveness and concentration is required when conducting training, consultations with family and staff, and developing care plans.
Occasionally exposed to interruptions due to crisis situations that often occur in inpatient settings.

Job Qualifications
Education
Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology OR a Master’s Degree in Clinical, Experimental, Developmental or Counselling Psychology.
A related clinical Master’s Degree as determined by the employer may be considered.

Experience
Significant related and current experience in applied behavioral analysis is required.
Experience working in an acute care or community health setting is required.
Experience working with populations who have developmental disabilities and behavioral challenges is required.
Experience working with adult populations is preferred.
Mental Health & Addictions experience is an asset.

Competencies
Knowledge of person-centered care, recovery, harm reduction and trauma informed care.
Knowledge of programs, services and community resources specific to addiction, mental health, and developmental disabilities.
Knowledge of co-occurring disorders, including mental health and addiction.
Demonstrated knowledge and skill in individual program planning and design, functional analysis lifespan development, treatment ethics, applied behavioral analysis, developmental disabilities and neurodivergence, skill teaching strategies, psychometrics, and addressing the impact of psychosocial disadvantage and poverty.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing with staff and families in a one to one and/or group environment.
Demonstrated ability to deliver training to staff and/or families as needed.
Demonstrated ability to work with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Ability to foster and support a safe and healthy work environment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as a member of an interprofessional team.
A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required.
