Responsabilités

Reporting to the Manager, Accessibility Services, the Interim Accessibility Advisor is responsible for the assessment, implementation, and monitoring of individualized academic accommodations for students with disabilities, supporting MSVU's compliance with its legal duty to accommodate. This role involves assessing student needs, identifying barriers to participation in learning environments, determining appropriate and reasonable accommodations, and collaborating with instructors and other campus partners to support effective implementation.

The Accessibility Advisor works directly with students on a one-on-one basis, manages an assigned caseload, independently makes accommodation decisions, supports students in navigating applications for disability-related funding, and identifies and recommends appropriate assistive technologies and accessibility supports.

The Accessibility Advisor is also responsible for remaining current on trends, developments, and emerging practices in disability and accessibility and contributing this knowledge to the ongoing development of Accessibility Services practices, procedures, and resources. The Advisor contributes to campus awareness of disability as a facet of diversity, supports the integration of accessibility considerations into University practices, and works collaboratively with campus partners to identify and address barriers to equitable access to education.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a university degree and a minimum of two years of directly related experience in a service environment, including direct experience supporting persons with disabilities. Experience in a post-secondary and/or student services environment is preferred.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong assessment, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, including the ability to exercise sound judgment in complex situations where policies, legislation, or established precedents may not provide clear direction. Strong communication, active listening, conflict resolution, and relationship-building skills are required, along with the diplomacy, tact, and sensitivity necessary to work effectively with students, faculty, and other campus partners.

The successful candidate will be highly organized, able to manage a caseload and competing priorities, and consistently adhere to established procedures and deadlines. Knowledge of disability, accessibility, and accommodation practices, as well as assistive technology and accessibility software, is considered an asset.

The Accessibility Advisor must remain current on evolving best practices, legislation, and case law related to disability and accessibility and demonstrate a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and reconciliation.

Candidates should be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and have an aptitude for learning and using business enterprise systems. Previous experience with systems such as Colleague and SharePoint is considered an asset.
