The Maintenance Technician is responsible for providing a broad range of maintenance, repair, construction, and facilities support services across NSCAD University's campuses. This position plays a critical role in ensuring that university buildings, systems, and equipment are maintained in a safe, functional, and efficient manner. The incumbent performs preventative and corrective maintenance on building infrastructure, responds to service requests and emergencies, supports regulatory compliance, and contributes to a safe and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Responsabilités

Preventative and Corrective Maintenance

  • Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance of university buildings, equipment, and operating systems.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests, equipment failures, and facility-related emergencies
  • Troubleshoot and repair building systems, including mechanical, plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment.


Building Systems and Equipment

  • Maintain, repair, and service various heating systems, boilers, pumps, exhaust fans, and HVAC equipment.
  • Perform plumbing repairs and installations as required.
  • Complete drywall repairs, patching, and finishing work.
  • Carry out painting projects and maintain interior and exterior finishes.
  • Install and repair locksets and cut keys for university facilities.

General Construction

  • Perform general carpentry work and small-scale construction projects.
  • Assist with renovations, alterations, and facility improvement projects.
  • Construct, repair, and modify building components and fixtures as required.

Safety and Compliance

  • Perform all duties in compliance with the Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act, applicable building and electrical codes, and university policies and procedures.
  • Participate in monthly safety inspections, including emergency lighting inspections, fire exit inspections and clearance verification, and fire extinguisher inspections.
  • Serve as a designated Fire Warden and assist with emergency preparedness activities.
  • Maintain awareness of workplace hazards and follow safe work practices when using tools, equipment, and chemicals.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent plus a inimum five (5) years of related maintenance experience in an industrial, commercial, institutional, or facilities environment is required (an equivalent combination of education or experience may be considered.)
  • Demonstrated experience performing maintenance and repair work involving building systems, mechanical equipment, carpentry, plumbing, painting, and general facility upkeep is required.
  • A valid Drivers liscense is required.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and effectively prioritize competing demands is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with students, faculty, staff, contractors, and visitors is required.
  • Proficiency using smartphones, email, and digital communication tools is required.
  • Fall Arrest Certification is preferred.

  • Ladder Safety Training is preferred.

  • Standard First Aid and CPR Certification are preferred.
