Definition of Work:


The Social Work Assistant provides para-professional services to clients, and
their families in a supportive and assisting role to Social Workers and other
health care team members. This person will report to the Manager of Community
Supports Services with NL Health Services -Central Zone.
This Social Work Assistant will assist Community Support Social Workers in the
community setting by providing interventions of a practical and concrete nature.
These interventions include but are not limited to, Special Assistance Orders
including health supplies, equipment and oxygen, completing financial
assessments and liaising with community and government resources on behalf of
clients. This work involves client and family interviews and consultations with a
variety of agencies and staff, in person and by telephone. The Social Work
Assistant will support Community Support Social Workers with scheduling,
telephone calls and completion of assigned monitoring visits to clients in their
homes and personal care homes. The Social Work Assistant works
collaboratively as part of a team and may conduct independent visits to clients
under the direction of the Community Support Social Worker. Written
correspondence and documentation, as well as support in compiling reports and
statistical information for the social worker may also be required.

Required Qualifications:
• Minimum 3 year completion of a post-secondary diploma in social
sciences.
• Consideration may be given to candidates who have completed two years
post-secondary training at the university level in an area of social
sciences.
• Experience in a health setting or community setting with demonstrated
ability to deal effectively with the public.
• Hold a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and the use of a personal vehicle for
work purposes.
• Ability to receive direction, accept delegated tasks and perform these
collaboratively or independently.

Preferred qualifications:
• Knowledge of the community supports program and agencies which may
be involved in supporting clients and families.
• Minimum 2 years experience as a social work assistant, social services
worker or area of community supports.
• Strong analytical and organizational skills
