Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated and dependable Summer Student Kitchen Assistant to support our Chef in providing nutritious meals and snacks for children in a daycare setting. This is an excellent opportunity for a student interested in gaining hands-on experience in food service, food preparation, and kitchen operations while working in a supportive and positive environment.

The successful candidate will assist with meal preparation, food handling, cleaning and sanitation, inventory support, and maintaining a safe and organized kitchen.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the daily preparation and serving of breakfast and lunch according to approved daycare menus and nutrition guidelines.
  • Support the Chef with basic food preparation tasks.
  • Wash, peel, chop, and portion fruits, vegetables, and other ingredients.
  • Ensure meals and snacks are prepared, handled, and stored according to food safety, allergy, and public health regulations.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized kitchen environment.
  • Wash dishes, sanitize equipment, and clean countertops, tables, floors, and other kitchen surfaces.
  • Follow daily and weekly cleaning schedules, including garbage and recycling disposal.
  • Properly store food items, label containers, and rotate stock as required.
  • Assist with monitoring inventory levels, reporting supply needs, and helping with supply orders.
  • Communicate effectively with kitchen and childcare staff to support smooth daily operations.
  • Follow all daycare policies and procedures related to health, safety, confidentiality, and workplace conduct.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Must be eligible to work in Canada and meet any requirements of a summer student employment program, if applicable.
  • Previous experience in food service, food preparation, or a kitchen environment is an asset but not required.
  • Knowledge of food handling and food safety practices is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced kitchen setting.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Positive attitude, reliability, and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to follow instructions and maintain high standards of cleanliness and safety.
