The Opportunity We are currently seeking a Manager, Central Engineering to join our Technical Services team in St. John's, NL. This is a permanent position, working a Monday to Friday schedule, based in St. John's. Travel to both Long Harbour and Voisey's Bay locations will be required as part of this role. As a Central Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of engineering professionals from multiple disciplines for overseeing the development of engineering projects from preliminary economic assessments to execution. This will be completed in a technically viable, cost effective and timely manner. The focus will be engineering interdisciplinary coordination for scope definition/control, and schedule of engineering deliverables to meet Procurement, Construction and Operational requirements.
The Manager will ensure all engineering projects being are completed within budget, on schedule, and meet or exceed the owner's requirements. The incumbent is expected to understand complex engineering projects, participate in engineering site visits, engineering project reviews, design PHRs and HAZOPs, ensuring the adequate level of engineering has been completed and in accordance with the relevant Vale Engineering Standards. Additionally, in this position you will:
  • Lead and manage all engineering functions within the Project Team, including Mining, Processing, Electrical, Mechanical, and Civil disciplines.
  • Develop and support direct reports through coaching, performance reviews, progress monitoring, and guidance to ensure delivery of study and detailed design requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to all project procedures and controls by both internal team members and engineering contractors.
  • Manage and control scope changes within engineering functions, ensuring alignment with project objectives.
  • Contribute to the development of the Risk Management Plan, including identification and evaluation of engineering and technical risks.
  • Support the development of effective interfaces with Operations to ensure appropriate input into project development and ensure adherence to all project procedures and controls by both internal team members and engineering contractors.
  • Provide strategic direction regarding engineering support, vendor and contractor selection, and technical approaches to project execution.
  • Review and participate in safety studies and risk assessments (e.g., HAZOP, PHA, failsafe reviews) to ensure all hazards are identified and appropriate mitigation measures are incorporated into design.
  • Represent the owner's interests by ensuring technical designs are cost-effective (both Capex and Opex) and aligned with operational requirements.
  • Manage engineering contractors and consultants, including review and approval of design deliverables (e.g., drawings, specifications, scopes of work) and improve contractor-client interface processes to enhance efficiency and integration.
  • Monitor engineering contractor performance, including progress against schedule, deliverables, and man-hour budgets, identifying inefficiencies where applicable.

About You Education:
  • An Undergraduate Degree in Engineering is required.
  • P. Eng is required, PMP is preferred.
Experience:
  • A minimum of 11 years' experience in a similar leadership role is required.
  • Experience in open pit mining, underground mining and/or a hydrometallurgical processing plant/refinery is considered a strong asset.
Skills:
  • Ability to coordinate multidiscipline engineering teams.
  • High level of people development skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and organizational skills.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Technical understanding of underground mining is an asset.
