Accountant I (Non Supervisory)
Position: Temporary Full Time (35 hours per week)

Position Status: Temporary to March 31, 2027 with the possibility of extension
Location: Confederation Building - West Block, St. John's
Salary Scale: CG-29 under the CUPE 1560 Collective Agreement ($27.61 - $30.67)
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Accountant I - Accounts Payable to join our Finance team. Reporting to the Manager of Accounts Payable, this position is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Accounts Payable function and providing leadership, guidance, and support to the AP team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and oversee the daily operations of the Accounts Payable team, ensuring timely and accurate processing of invoices, payments, and expense claims.
- Mentor and train new team members, fostering a collaborative and efficient work environment.
- Assign and review work for seven (7) Accounts Payable team members to ensure workload balance and adherence to deadlines.
- Review and approve payment vouchers and travel claims for payment, ensuring compliance with NL Government policies, and internal financial controls.
- Assist in the preparation of journal entries and reconciliation of balance sheet accounts.
- Support the preparation for and participation in year-end audits.
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives and assist with other duties as required.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Post-secondary education acquired through completion of an undergraduate degree in Business with a specialization in accounting or a 3-year college Diploma in Business Administration with a concentration in financial accounting
- 3-5 years of experience in accounts payable or a similar accounting role.
- Proven experience in supervising or leading a finance or accounting team.
- Strong understanding of financial controls, reconciliation, and audit processes.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (especially Excel) and accounting software systems.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy and compliance.
- Knowledge of Cayenta Finance software is an asset.
