The Role

This is a survey-specific drafting and geomatics position focused on processing survey data and preparing professional survey deliverables.

Working closely with survey crews, project managers, engineers, and professional land surveyors, you will transform field-collected survey data into accurate plans, drawings, calculations, and digital deliverables that support a wide variety of projects.

This position offers an excellent opportunity for an individual seeking a long-term career in surveying and geomatics. Depending on qualifications and experience, candidates may be considered at the Intermediate, or Senior level.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process survey field data.
  • Coordinate with field staff to resolve discrepancies and obtain additional information where required.
  • Prepare legal survey plans, subdivision plans, topographic surveys, engineering survey plans, reference plans, and construction-related drawings.
  • Draft plans and figures using Carlson Survey and related software platforms.
  • Assist with coordinate geometry calculations, boundary analysis, and survey computations.
  • Prepare and interact with three-dimensional surface files, contours, profiles, and electronic survey deliverables.
  • Perform quality control reviews of drawings, calculations, and deliverables prior to professional review.
  • Maintain project files and records in accordance with company standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Support project managers, engineers, and professional land surveyors in the successful delivery of projects.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining drafting standards, templates, and workflows.

Qualifications & Experience

Southwest Surveys maintains a structured career development framework that supports the progression of technical expertise, professional capability, and leadership responsibility. We are currently seeking an Intermediate or Senior Draftsperson.

A brief overview of the minimum expectations for each level is provided below.

A diploma in Geomatics, Survey Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, Drafting Technology, or a related discipline is required. Consideration may be given to candidates with a certification and significant relevant experience.

Intermediate Level

  • 5+ years of relevant surveying, drafting, or geomatics experience.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and survey drafting workflows.
  • Experience processing survey field data and preparing survey plans.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Routine client interaction with periodic guidance.

Senior Level

  • 10+ years of surveying, geomatics, or technical drafting experience.
  • Advanced understanding of AutoCAD and survey drafting workflows.
  • Advanced understanding of survey plan preparation, coordinate geometry, and survey calculations.
  • Ability to mentor junior staff and review completed work for quality and consistency.
  • Strong understanding of surveying standards, legal descriptions, and plan requirements.
  • Regular, independent client liaison.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using Carlson Survey.
  • Familiarity with New Brunswick subdivision and land development processes.
  • Experience processing LiDAR data, creating and interfacing with three-dimensional surface models, and performing quantity calculations.
  • CST certification or equivalent geomatics credential.
  • Experience with the preparation and review of legal descriptions, survey reports, and supporting documentation.
  • GIS experience.
  • Interest in pursuing professional development in surveying and geomatics.
