Higher Talent is excited to conduct a search for a dynamic, forward thinking General Manager for The City of Corner Brook's Civic Centre.

THE ROLE:

The General Manager of the Civic Centre is a dynamic, forward-thinking and strategic leader responsible for the overall management and operation of the City's premier multi-purpose facility. This role oversees all aspects of the Civic Centre's business functions, including sales, marketing, food and beverage services, public relations, finance, human resources, box office operations, ice and facility booking, event services, maintenance, housekeeping, security, and safety. Reporting to the Director of Recreation & Tourism, the General Manager will ensure the facility operates efficiently, delivers exceptional service, and meets the evolving needs of the community, clients, and stakeholders.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operational Leadership

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the Civic Centre, ensuring all services are delivered effectively, efficiently, and in alignment with City standards
  • Provide direct supervision and support to Civic Centre staff, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and teamwork
  • Oversee scheduling, staffing, and logistics for facility operations and events

Event & Facility Management

  • Oversee facility bookings, including updating event calendars, coordinating with promoters/agents, and evaluating event proposals prioritizing minor programming as per city policy.
  • Manage facility booking access to ensure opportunities to book ice and other areas of the facility are in accordance with city policies and to ensure similar entities are provided balanced access to booking opportunities.
  • Prepare event estimates and financial projections to assess viability and success
  • Collaborate with the Event Coordinator to ensure all event-related requirements are met, including ticketing, staffing, and communications
  • Review and assist with event settlements to ensure accurate financial reconciliation.

Financial Oversight

  • Develop and manage the Civic Centre's operating and capital budgets
  • Monitor financial performance, analyze variances, and implement cost-effective strategies
  • Provide regular updates and reports to the Director on financial and operational status

Human Resources & Staff Development

  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and training of Civic Centre staff in collaboration with Human Resources
  • Conduct performance reviews, address personnel matters, and implement corrective actions as needed
  • Promote a safe, inclusive, and productive work environment

Client & Stakeholder Relations

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, promoters, sponsors, tenants, vendors, contractors, and community stakeholders
  • Ensure high levels of customer service and responsiveness to inquiries and feedback
  • Represent the Civic Centre at meetings, functions, and public events as required

Technology and Systems Management

  • Oversee the use of event booking software and other operational systems to ensure accurate scheduling and reporting.
  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation of event data and financial transactions.

ABOUT YOU:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Recreation Management, Hospitality, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in public facility or venue management.
  • Minimum 2 years of direct supervisory experience at the management level.
  • Experience in a unionized environment is considered an asset.
  • Proven leadership and team-building capabilities.
  • Strong communication, conflict resolution, and customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, projects, and operational logistics.
  • Working knowledge of sales, marketing, event services, facility maintenance, food and beverage operations, and safety protocols.
  • Experience in arena management.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and event management software.
  • Serve as Manager on Duty for selected events, flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and during holidays.
  • Attendance at meetings and functions outside regular hours may be required without additional compensation, unless otherwise stated in City policy.
