Position Description

POSITION TITLE: Collection Team Member (Vehicle Operator)

REPORTS TO: Director of Public Works

POSITION SUMMARY: This position is responsible for the collection of municipal garbage, recyclables and organics; maintenance and compliance for municipal collection vehicle(s) and working on other projects as assigned.

General areas of responsibility and duties associated with Collection Team member are outlined here, but as municipal jobs are ever-changing you may be asked to support and assist in other areas. Assignments or tasks may change; an employee may be directed to complete something new within their job/ dept based on their ability at any given time. We are a small team who pitch in where needed to serve the community.

Job Duties and Responsibilities on average:

• Collecting garbage, recyclables and organics from roadside in a safe, professional and timely manner. This is physically demanding work, the ability to lift and load repeatedly from ground to truck is crucial; and include communicating & problem-solving with public regarding collection standards. - 75%
• Clean up or support at Transfer Station Property - 5%
• Public guidance onsite(s) or at transfer station - 5%
• Routine maintenance of collection vehicles and completion/submission of vehicle inspection reports ensuring compliance and or other duties as assigned - 15%

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING

Education

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Class III Driver's License with air brake endorsement.
• Must have clear driving record, a copy must be provided.

Experience

• One year but less than two
• Previous solid waste and/ or recycling experience considered an asset but not necessary.
• Truck or machinery, equipment operation awareness, maintenance and experience an asset.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Knowledge of safe work practices.
• Possess First Aid, CPR, and WHMIS certificates.
• Basic knowledge of vehicle and machinery operations and general maintenance and any skills in mechanical repairs.
• Ability to self-direct, work independently, and work within a team, sometimes all in same day.
• Ability to work under pressure and complete tasks well and on-time.
• Proven experience having situational awareness.
• Understands the importance of working safely, using PPE, completing inspections and complying with the OHS system. Supports the safety of fellow employees, teammates and the public while operating municipal vehicle and machinery.
• Potential based on experience and comfort to join municipal EMO team.

Working Environment

• Work outside in all weather conditions and all seasons.
• Work at the roadside on both residential streets and secondary highways.
• Physically fit and the ability to lift a maximum of 50lbs repetitively.
• Constant interaction with the public on proper disposal regulations, practices, expectations and bylaws.

Hours: Monday - Friday, 7am to 3:30pm, (hours may flex slightly depending on weather, other needs; with occasional overtime.)
