ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
NL Health Services – Eastern Urban Zone is seeking a permanent full-time (1.0 FTE) fellowship-trained Pediatric Ophthalmologist to assume a full-time clinical practice at the Janeway Children's Health and Rehabilitation Centre in St. John's, NL — the province's centre for specialized pediatric care. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2026, though this can be adjusted based on the successful candidate's availability.
The Janeway Children's Health and Rehabilitation Centre is a 71-bed tertiary care referral hospital for the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Janeway is a teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador (MUNL) and has a residency program in Pediatrics. The successful candidate will be involved in medical student and resident teaching and will hold an appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor with Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Pediatric Ophthalmology department has the support of Orthoptic services and on-site equipment including OCT, ultrasound, keratometer, and RetCam. Fundus photography and visual field testing are available at the Health Sciences Centre in the same hospital complex.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Medical Degree (MD) from a recognized institution
- Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Certification in Ophthalmology with fellowship training in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (or equivalent)
- Eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador (www.cpsnl.ca)
- Eligible for membership of the medical staff of NL Health Services
- Must satisfy credentialing requirements of NL Health Services including a satisfactory criminal record check and vulnerable sector check
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide comprehensive Pediatric Ophthalmology services including inpatient and outpatient care
- Utilize on-site equipment including OCT, ultrasound, keratometer, and RetCam in clinical assessments
- Provide weekend call coverage and adult strabismus services as required
- Participate in medical student and resident teaching through the MUNL affiliation
- Work collaboratively with Orthoptic services and the broader interdisciplinary pediatric team
- Support person- and family-centered care; promote patient and worker safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks, and implementing improvements
REMUNERATION
Remuneration for the provision of Pediatric Ophthalmology services is through an Alternate Payment Plan (APP) Agreement. Weekend call and adult strabismus services are reimbursed by the provincial Medical Care Plan (MCP).
