Product Designer - Mechanical

In this role, you'll employ strong CAD fundamentals to lead product design for a flexible solar system that disrupts current deployment models while acknowledging ground truths. Your deep curiosity will identify constraints to deployment and lead to optimal design decisions.

Key Responsibilities:
Own the CAD
- Lead CAD modeling process for the flexible solar system and hardware components-with a focus on engineering tradeoffs that result in an optimal product for utility-scale solar deployment.
- The Phase I goal is to develop the complete product concept that embeds features that show a meaningful system-level improvement over state-of-the art that is grounded in a "one-why deep" thinking. You will be curious and passionate about employing the next level of design via rapid iteration and its effects on delivering a scalable product.
- Your design cycle utilizes both Generative AI, first-principles, and input from others on the product team to iterate fast and deliver a product concept that meets our company goals.
Design for Cost and Scale
- Work closely with the Product team to understand how your design decisions influence cost, sourcing, and supply chain complexity. Help drive cost-down thinking through smarter geometry, part consolidation, and material selection.
Prototype & Iterate
- Participate in rapid prototyping and physical testing. What works in CAD is just the start-you'll get hands-on, gather feedback, and iterate fast. This will be in partnership with other team members, using your design and performing hands-on prototyping
Document for Execution
- Generate detailed drawings, BOMs, and manufacturing documentation. Contribute to a design system that supports clear communication, revision control, and smooth handoff to build partners.
Qualifications & Skills:
Education & Experience:
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or related field
- 1-3 years of experience in mechanical/product design
- Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Rhino, or equivalent)
- Demonstrated experience taking CAD ownership on mechanical assemblies
- Interest in product cost structure, manufacturing constraints, and system-level design thinking
- Strong communication skills-you can explain your design choices to both engineers and non-engineers
- Bias toward action: when in doubt, you model it, prototype it, or go find the answer
